What Is Free Card?
Players can earn a free card by checking a hand that everyone else also checks, or more actively by raising a draw on an earlier street, inducing a fold or a check from the opponent on the following street. The free card play is especially common with strong draws, where a raise on the flop can win the pot outright, get called and see the turn cheaply, or induce a check on the turn allowing a free look at the river.

A player raises a flop continuation bet with a flush draw, and their opponent checks the turn, allowing the raiser to see the river card for free.

Strategy Tips
Look to raise with strong draws on the flop specifically to set up a potential free card play on the turn, especially against opponents likely to check when facing resistance. Be selective about which draws merit the free card play, favoring hands with strong backup equity like flush or open-ended straight draws over weaker gutshots. Recognize when checking back a marginal made hand in position might also earn you a cheap look at the next card without additional risk. Balance your free-card raising range with value raises to avoid becoming predictable to observant opponents.
