What Is Semi-Bluff?
The semi-bluff combines two ways to win: the opponent may fold immediately, or if called, the drawing hand can still improve to the best hand on a later street. This makes it a lower-risk bluff than betting with no equity at all.
Examples
Betting a flush draw on the flop, hoping to either win the pot immediately or hit the flush.
Raising with an open-ended straight draw to apply pressure while retaining outs.
Strategy Tips
Choose semi-bluffs with strong equity and good card removal, such as combo draws with 9+ outs, to maximize both fold equity and backup equity. Consider your opponent's tendencies: semi-bluffing works best against players capable of folding. Sizing matters -- a larger bet increases fold equity but also increases the amount you risk if called. Semi-bluffing from position is generally more effective since you retain control of the hand on future streets.
