What Is Equity?
Equity is expressed as a percentage representing the likelihood of winning the pot if the hand were to go to showdown from the current point, factoring in all possible remaining community cards. Equity calculations underpin core poker decisions like calling, raising, and bluffing, and are the foundation for concepts like pot odds and expected value.
Examples
A flush draw on the flop has roughly 35% equity against a made top pair hand with two cards to come.
Before the flop, pocket Aces have about 85% equity against a random hand.
Strategy Tips
Use an equity calculator regularly during study sessions to build intuition for how different hand matchups play out across various board textures. Compare your equity to the pot odds being offered to determine whether a call is profitable in a vacuum, then adjust for implied odds and fold equity. Remember that raw equity doesn't account for position or future betting, so a hand with good equity can still be a poor play if it's difficult to realize that equity out of position. Recognize the difference between equity and 'realized equity,' since factors like being out of position often prevent a hand from winning its full theoretical share of the pot.
