What Is Effective Stack?
Effective stack size is calculated per matchup rather than for the table as a whole, since a player with a large stack facing a short stack can only win or lose up to the amount of the shorter stack in that hand. Understanding effective stacks is essential for calculating stack-to-pot ratios and making accurate all-in and commitment decisions.
Examples
Player A has 200 big blinds and Player B has 40 big blinds; the effective stack between them is 40 big blinds, since that's the maximum either can win from the other.
When calculating whether to commit with a big hand, a player checks the effective stack against the smallest remaining opponent stack in a multiway pot.
Strategy Tips
Always calculate the effective stack against each specific opponent, not just your total chip count, especially in multiway pots where different opponents have different stack sizes. Use effective stack size to determine your stack-to-pot ratio, which helps decide whether a hand is worth committing to on a given street. Adjust your preflop opening and 3-betting ranges based on effective stack depth, since short effective stacks favor push/fold strategy over standard postflop play. Be mindful that against a covering stack, you risk your entire effective stack, so factor that risk into marginal decisions.
