What Is Implied Odds?
Implied odds account for the additional chips you expect to win from your opponent on later streets if you complete your drawing hand, making a call profitable even when the current pot odds alone don't justify it. Implied odds are especially relevant with well-disguised hands like set-mining small pocket pairs or flush draws, where opponents are less likely to anticipate the completed hand and more likely to pay it off.
Examples
A player calls a preflop raise with a small pocket pair specifically because of strong implied odds if they flop a well-hidden set.
A flush draw with poor direct pot odds is still a profitable call due to implied odds against an opponent likely to pay off a river bet.
Strategy Tips
Favor implied odds calls in position, since acting last gives you more control over extracting maximum value on later streets if your draw completes. Prioritize implied odds situations against deep-stacked opponents who are likely to pay off a big bet, since shallow stacks limit the potential future winnings. Be realistic about your opponent's likely calling tendencies when estimating implied odds, since tight, cautious opponents reduce the practical value of a speculative call. Combine implied odds with direct pot odds calculations for a complete picture before making a marginal calling decision.
