What Is Showdown?

Showdown only occurs if two or more players remain after the river betting round is complete. The player who made the last bet or raise typically shows first, followed by other players in clockwise order, though many players choose to show their cards voluntarily.

Examples

1

Two players checking the river and turning over their hands to determine the winner.

2

A player mucking their cards without showing when they know they've lost at showdown.

Strategy Tips

You are not required to show your hand first just because you're unsure who has the best hand -- know the house rules on showdown order. Consider strategically showing or not showing a hand based on the information it gives future opponents. Avoid slow-rolling, which is considered poor etiquette and can create unnecessary tension at the table. Reviewing showdowns, both wins and losses, is a valuable way to study opponents' tendencies.
