What Is Button (BTN)?

The button rotates clockwise after every hand and denotes the nominal dealer position, though in casino and online games an actual dealer handles the cards while the button simply marks positional order. Acting last on every postflop betting round gives the button player maximum information before making decisions, making it the single most profitable position at the table. Because of this advantage, players on the button typically play a much wider range of starting hands than they would from earlier positions.

Examples

1

A player on the button raises with a wide range of hands, taking advantage of acting last on the flop, turn, and river.

2

After a hand ends, the button moves one seat clockwise to the next player for the following hand.

Strategy Tips

Widen your opening range significantly from the button compared to earlier positions, since acting last postflop provides a major informational and strategic edge. Use the button's position to steal blinds and antes more frequently, especially against tight players in the blinds. Take advantage of your positional edge to control pot size and extract maximum value with strong hands. Study button-specific preflop charts, since this position supports far more hands profitably than any other seat at the table.
