What Is Position?
Acting later gives a player significant informational advantage, since they see their opponents' actions before making their own decision. This advantage compounds across every betting round, which is why players in late position can profitably play a much wider range of hands than those acting first. Position is often considered as important as, or more important than, hand strength itself in shaping strategy.
Examples
Being in position on the button, he was able to control the pot size throughout the hand.
Out of position in the big blind, she played a more cautious, defensive strategy.
Strategy Tips
Prioritize playing more hands from late position and fewer from early position to leverage the informational edge that position provides. Use in-position advantage to control pot size, extract value, and bluff more effectively. Play more cautiously out of position, since you must act without knowing your opponent's decision first. Recognize that even a mediocre hand can be profitable in position, while a strong hand out of position still requires careful play.
