What Is Wheel?

In standard high-hand games like Texas Hold'em, the wheel ranks as the lowest straight, with the Ace playing low. In lowball variants such as Razz or 2-7 Triple Draw (where different rules apply), the wheel or similar low hands take on very different, often premium, value.

Examples

1

Holding 4-5 on a board of A-2-3 to make the wheel.

2

In Razz, the wheel (A-2-3-4-5) representing the best possible hand.

Strategy Tips

Remember that the Ace plays low in a wheel and cannot also be used to make a Broadway straight in the same hand, so don't misjudge a board's straight possibilities. Be cautious when the board itself shows three or four wheel cards, since many opponents can also have live cards to complete the same low straight. In split-pot or lowball games, understand the specific rules for how the wheel and Ace interact, since they vary significantly by format. When holding the wheel in a standard game, be aware it's the weakest possible straight and vulnerable to any higher straight, flush, or better hand.
