What Is Nuts?
The nuts changes as community cards are revealed, so a hand that is the nuts on the flop may no longer be the nuts by the river. Holding the nuts guarantees you cannot lose the hand, though it doesn't guarantee winning the maximum, since opponents may fold before paying you off. The term "second nuts" refers to the second-best possible hand.
Examples
With the board showing A-K-Q-J-10, any player holding a King has the nuts with a Broadway straight.
He flopped the nut flush and slowplayed it to keep opponents in the pot.
Strategy Tips
When you have the nuts, consider your opponent's likely calling range before choosing a bet size to maximize value. Slowplaying the nuts can be effective on dry boards where the danger of opponents catching up is low. Always reassess whether you still hold the nuts as new community cards are revealed. Be aware that the nuts can shift dramatically on the river, especially on boards with multiple possible straights or flushes.
