What Is Pocket Pair?
Pocket pairs range from premium hands like pocket aces down to small pairs like deuces, and their strategic value shifts significantly based on rank. Small and medium pocket pairs are often played for their "set mining" potential, hoping to flop a set (three of a kind), which is a very well-disguised, powerful hand. Roughly one in every 17 hands dealt is a pocket pair.

He called a raise with a small pocket pair, hoping to flop a set against the aggressor's likely overpair.
Strategy Tips
Play premium pocket pairs like aces, kings, and queens aggressively for value from any position. Use small and medium pocket pairs primarily for set mining, calling raises when you have good implied odds and deep enough stacks. Be prepared to fold small pocket pairs when you miss your set and face significant aggression on the flop. Adjust pocket pair strategy based on stack depth, since set mining requires enough remaining chips to make hitting a set worthwhile.
