What Is Exploitative Play?
While GTO strategy aims to be unexploitable regardless of opponent adjustments, exploitative play intentionally unbalances your own ranges to maximize profit against a specific opponent's leaks, such as folding too often to 3-bets or overvaluing top pair. Exploitative adjustments can generate significantly higher win rates than pure GTO against weaker players, but they carry the risk of being counter-exploited by observant opponents.
Examples
A player notices an opponent folds to almost every 3-bet, so they begin 3-betting a much wider range specifically against that player.
Against a calling station who rarely folds, a player stops bluffing entirely and only bets for value.
Strategy Tips
Identify clear, repeatable patterns in an opponent's play before deviating significantly from balanced strategy, since exploiting based on small sample sizes can backfire. Track tendencies like fold-to-3-bet, WTSD, and aggression frequency using a HUD when playing online to spot exploitable leaks quickly. Be ready to adjust back toward balance if an opponent starts to notice and counter-adjust to your exploitative lines. Use exploitative play most aggressively against weaker, recreational opponents, and default closer to GTO against strong, adaptive regulars.
