What Is Ducks?
Ducks are a common slang term used at the table when a player is dealt a pair of twos before the flop. Like other small pocket pairs, ducks derive most of their value from their ability to flop a set, since they are usually dominated when unimproved against overcards.
Examples
A player says 'ducks' after peeking at their hole cards and finding pocket Twos.
With ducks in early position, a player folds preflop against multiple aggressive raisers rather than committing chips.
Strategy Tips
Play ducks primarily for their set-mining potential in multiway pots with good implied odds, since flopping a set with a small pocket pair like 22 is a rare but very profitable outcome. Avoid overvaluing ducks after the flop when overcards appear, as the hand becomes vulnerable to nearly any unpaired high card. In deep stack situations, ducks gain value because the implied odds for hitting a set improve. Fold ducks readily to significant preflop aggression in shallower stack situations where set-mining isn't cost effective.
