Two Pair Strategy Tips

1

Top two pair (using both hole cards to make the two highest pairs on the board) is a very strong hand. Bet for value and do not slow-play on wet boards.

2

Bottom two pair is vulnerable. If you hold 5-3 on an A-K-5-3 board, any opponent with A-K, A-5, A-3, or K-5 has a higher two pair.

3

Two pair loses to any straight, flush, full house, or better. On connected or suited boards, be cautious about committing your entire stack.

4

When the board pairs in Hold'em, your two pair can be "counterfeited." If you hold 8-7 on a 8-7-K board and the turn brings a K, now everyone with a king has at least two pair.

Common Mistakes with Two Pair

Overvaluing bottom two pair on dangerous boards. When the board has multiple high cards and draws, your small two pair is often behind.

Not recognizing when your two pair has been counterfeited by a board pair. For example, holding 9-8 on a board of 9-8-A-A makes your two pair weaker since any ace now has a higher pair.

Failing to consider kickers. If the board shows A-K-7-3-2 and you hold A-7, your two pair has a 3 kicker. An opponent with A-K has a higher two pair entirely.

How Two Pair Plays in Texas Hold'em

Flopping Top Two Pair

You hold A♥ K♠ and the flop comes A♦ K♣ 5♠. You have top two pair. This is a very strong hand. Bet for value and raise if an opponent bets into you.

Counterfeited Two Pair

You hold 9♠ 8♥ on a 9♦ 8♣ 3♠ board with two pair. The turn brings a 3♥. Now the board has a pair of threes, and any player with a nine or a pocket pair above eights has a stronger hand.

Two Pair vs. Overpair

You hold J♠ 10♥ and the board is J♦ 10♣ 4♠ 2♥ 8♣. You have jacks and tens. An opponent with Q-Q has an overpair but your two pair wins. Two pair beats one pair regardless of rank.

Two Pair Tiebreaker Rules

Two pair hands are ranked by the higher pair first, then the lower pair, then the kicker. K-K-5-5-A beats Q-Q-J-J-A because kings outrank queens. If both players share the same high pair, the second pair decides. If both pairs match, the kicker breaks the tie. If all five cards are identical in rank, the pot is split.

Two Pair FAQ

Does two pair beat three of a kind?

No. Three of a kind beats two pair. Three of a kind ranks seventh while two pair ranks eighth in the poker hand hierarchy.

How do you compare two different two-pair hands?

Compare the highest pair first. If those are equal, compare the second pair. If both pairs match, the kicker determines the winner. K-K-3-3-A beats Q-Q-J-J-A because kings outrank queens as the top pair.

What does "counterfeited" mean with two pair?

A two pair hand is counterfeited when the board pairs a card higher than one of your pairs, effectively making your lower pair irrelevant. For example, if you hold 5-4 on a board of 5-4-A-A, your fives and fours are now weaker because anyone with an ace has a higher pair.

How often do you flop two pair in Hold'em?

With two unpaired hole cards, you flop two pair about 2% of the time. By the river, the chance of making two pair or better increases to about 23.5% in a full Hold'em hand.
