What Is VPIP?
VPIP excludes forced blind postings and measures only voluntary preflop action like calling or raising, making it one of the most fundamental stats for gauging how loose or tight a player is. It's almost always analyzed alongside PFR (preflop raise percentage) to distinguish loose-passive players from loose-aggressive ones.
Examples
A tight regular with a VPIP around 18-22% in a 6-max cash game.
A loose recreational player with a VPIP over 45%, entering nearly half of all hands.
Strategy Tips
Use VPIP together with PFR to classify opponents -- a high VPIP with a low PFR suggests a loose-passive player who calls too much, while a high VPIP with a high PFR suggests a loose-aggressive player. Adjust your value betting and bluffing frequency based on VPIP -- players with very high VPIP call down lighter and are better bluff targets to avoid and value targets to exploit. Remember that VPIP needs a reasonably large sample size, ideally several hundred hands or more, before it becomes a reliable indicator of a player's true tendencies. Compare VPIP by position when possible, since a player's willingness to enter pots naturally increases in later positions.
