Reraise (3-Bet)

Raising a raise. The initial raise is a "2-bet," the reraise is a "3-bet," and a raise of the 3-bet is a "4-bet."

What Is Reraise (3-Bet)?

Reraising, most commonly called 3-betting, is used both for value with premium hands and as a bluff to apply pressure and win the pot immediately preflop. A well-constructed 3-betting range mixes strong value hands with select bluffing candidates, often hands with good blocker or playability value, to remain balanced and difficult to exploit.

Examples

1

She 3-bet the button's open with pocket kings, hoping to build a big pot.

2

He mixed in a light 3-bet bluff with suited connectors to balance his aggressive range.

Strategy Tips

Build a balanced 3-betting range that includes both premium value hands and select bluffs to avoid becoming predictable. Use blockers, like holding an ace, to reduce the chance your opponent has a strong hand when selecting 3-bet bluff candidates. Adjust your 3-betting frequency based on opponents' fold-to-3-bet statistics, 3-betting more often against players who fold too much. Consider stack depth and position carefully, since 3-betting out of position carries more risk than 3-betting from the blinds or in position.
