What Is Double Up?
Doubling up is often essential for short-stacked players to remain competitive as blinds and antes increase throughout a tournament. A double up typically occurs when an all-in player is called and wins the resulting pot, roughly doubling their prior stack size, though the exact multiple depends on the size of the calling stack relative to the all-in amount.
Examples
A player moves all-in with pocket Kings for 15 big blinds, gets called by Ace-Queen, and wins, doubling their stack to 30 big blinds.
A short stack needs to double up twice in a row just to reach the average stack size at the table.
Strategy Tips
When short-stacked, look for strong spots to get your chips in as a favorite rather than waiting too long and being forced into worse situations as your stack dwindles. Understand that doubling up doesn't guarantee tournament survival, since blinds continue to rise, so plan your next moves after a successful double. Avoid unnecessary risk when you don't need to double up soon, especially with a healthy stack relative to the blinds. Track your stack in big blinds rather than chip count to better judge when a double-up opportunity is worth pursuing.
