Chart-style illustration of casino session win probability by game

Every casino game carries a published house edge, yet almost nobody plays long enough for that edge to be the whole story. What a visitor actually experiences is a single session, and in a single session the question is not "what is my expected loss?" but "what are the odds I walk out ahead?" This reference works out the casino session win probability for the most common even-money bets using exact probability calculations, and lays the results out so they can be cited, checked and reused.

Key Findings

Key findings: After 100 flat bets, the chance of finishing ahead is about 35.5% on single-zero roulette, 40.5% on the craps Pass Line, 44.7% on the Baccarat Banker bet and 26.5% on double-zero roulette. After 1,000 bets those figures fall to 18.8%, 31.6%, 35.8% and 4.5%. The lower the house edge, the slower the decline, but every game trends toward a loss as bets accumulate.

Methodology: How These Probabilities Were Calculated

All figures in this article were calculated for this study rather than copied from another site. For each game we modelled a player who places the same flat wager on every round and never changes the bet size. We then computed the exact probability distribution of net results by repeated convolution of the single-bet outcome distribution, one bet at a time, up to 1,000 bets. Because the calculation is exact, there is no simulation noise and the results are fully reproducible.

The inputs are the single-bet win and loss probabilities. For roulette they follow directly from the wheel: an even-money bet wins on 18 of 37 pockets on a single-zero wheel and 18 of 38 pockets on a double-zero wheel. For the craps Pass Line the win probability per resolved bet is 244/495, or about 49.29%. For baccarat we used the standard eight-deck outcome probabilities of 45.86% for Banker, 44.62% for Player and 9.52% for a tie, which reproduce the published house edges of 1.06% and 1.24% to within rounding. Ties push and do not change the running total. The Banker bet pays 19-to-20 after the standard 5% commission, and we modelled that payout exactly.

We report three quantities. The first is the probability that the net result after a fixed number of bets is strictly positive, which we call finishing ahead. The second is the probability of being ahead at some point during that run of bets, which matters for anyone who plans to quit when they hit a profit target. The third is the expected net result and its spread. Published house edges come from the Wizard of Odds; the table below lists the figures used.

Why House Edge Alone Misleads Session Players

A house edge is an average over an enormous number of bets. A 2.70% edge on single-zero roulette means that, per unit wagered, the casino keeps 2.70% over the long run. It says nothing about the shape of the distribution you face tonight. Over 100 even-money bets the standard deviation of your net result is about 10 units, while the expected loss is only 2.7 units. The randomness is almost four times larger than the edge, which is why a meaningful share of players do finish ahead after a hundred spins.

As the number of bets grows, the picture changes. The expected loss scales with the number of bets, but the standard deviation scales only with the square root of that number. After 500 bets on a single-zero wheel the expected loss is about 13.5 units against a standard deviation of roughly 22.4 units. The edge is now more than half the size of the typical swing, and the probability of finishing ahead has dropped from 35.5% to 25.8%. This is the practical meaning of the law of large numbers: it does not arrive suddenly, it grinds.

Probability of Finishing a Session Ahead

The table below shows the exact probability that a flat-betting player is up at the end of the stated number of bets. The sample sizes are chosen to cover a short visit of 10 bets through an extended grind of 1,000 bets.

The Short-Session Illusion

At 10 bets the games look surprisingly alike. Single-zero roulette gives a 34.4% chance of being ahead, double-zero roulette 31.4%, the Pass Line 36.0% and Banker 44.5%. Part of the reason is the number of ties and pushes: a 10-bet session often ends exactly level, and a level result is neither a win nor a loss. The probability of finishing exactly even after 10 even-money bets is about 24% on both roulette wheels. Short sessions therefore reward the player more than the edge implies, which reinforces the feeling that the game is beatable.

The Long-Session Decay

The decay is steepest where the edge is largest. On a double-zero wheel the chance of finishing ahead drops from 31.4% after 10 bets to 26.5% after 100, 11.1% after 500 and just 4.5% after 1,000. Moving from a double-zero to a single-zero wheel at 1,000 bets raises the chance of finishing ahead from 4.5% to 18.8%, roughly a fourfold improvement from a rule change that many players never check. Our guide to the best online casinos lists the table variants worth looking for.

Why Baccarat Banker Leads the Table

The Banker bet has the lowest edge of the four, 1.06%, and its probability of finishing ahead stays above 40% through 500 bets. It also has the highest tie frequency of the group, which slows the drift. The Player bet, at 1.24%, trails only slightly: 42.8% after 100 bets and 33.5% after 1,000. The 0.18 percentage point difference in edge looks trivial, but compounded over 1,000 bets it separates 35.8% from 33.5% in the chance of ending ahead. The Craps Pass Line

The Pass Line edge of 1.41% sits between the two baccarat bets and single-zero roulette. Its probability of finishing ahead peaks at 40.5% at both 50 and 100 resolved bets, and falls to 31.6% by 1,000. Because a craps bet can take several rolls to resolve, 100 resolved bets takes substantially longer at the table than 100 roulette spins or baccarat hands. Pace matters, because the number of bets per hour determines how fast the player slides down these curves.

Probability of Being Ahead at Some Point

Many players do not plan to stay for a fixed number of bets; they plan to quit when they are ahead. For them the more relevant statistic is the probability of reaching a profit at least once. We calculated this by treating a one-unit profit as an absorbing barrier.

Game and bet10 bets50 bets100 bets250 bets500 bets1000 bets
Single-zero roulette, even-money73.3%86.2%89.3%92.0%93.3%94.1%

Double-zero roulette, even-money71.3%83.6%86.4%88.6%89.5%89.9%

These numbers are high, which explains why "quit while you are ahead" feels like a workable plan. After 100 bets there is an 89.3% chance that a single-zero roulette player was ahead at some moment, and a 90.7% chance for the Pass Line. Even on a double-zero wheel the figure is 86.4%. The catch is that being ahead by one unit at some moment is a very small victory, and it requires the discipline to stop immediately. Almost nobody who has just gone one unit ahead walks away. Once the target is raised to a more meaningful profit, the probability of hitting it falls quickly, and the player is back in the long-session decay shown above.

Reading the Two Tables Together

The gap between the two tables is the casino's profit engine. After 500 single-zero roulette bets, 93.3% of players were ahead at some point, but only 25.8% finish ahead. Roughly seven in ten of those who touched a profit gave it back. The edge does not need to win every session; it only needs to be there as the sessions get longer.

Expected Net Result and the Range of Outcomes

The distribution of outcomes is approximately bell-shaped, centred on the expected loss, with a spread set by the number of bets. The table below shows the expected net result, the standard deviation and the approximate 95% range for flat unit bets on the two roulette wheels.

WheelBetsExpected net (units)Std. deviation (units)95% range (units)
Single-zero100-2.7010.0-22.3 to +16.9
Single-zero500-13.5122.4-57.3 to +30.3
Double-zero100-5.2610.0-24.8 to +14.3
Double-zero500-26.3222.3-70.1 to +17.5

On the double-zero wheel after 500 bets, the expected result is a loss of 26.3 units, and even the upper end of the 95% range, +17.5 units, is a modest profit. On the single-zero wheel the same range extends to +30.3 units. Switching wheels does not make a loss impossible, but it moves the entire distribution to the right by about 12.8 units per 500 bets.

Practical Implications for Bankroll and Bet Sizing

Three practical conclusions follow from the data. First, the number of bets matters more than most players realise. Beyond the first 50 or so bets, every extra bet lowers the chance of finishing ahead, so a lower-pace game, a shorter stay or smaller total action all help. Second, game and rule selection matter: choosing Banker over Player, or a single-zero wheel over a double-zero wheel, improves every column of the table. Third, bet size changes the size of the swing but not the probability of finishing ahead in a flat-betting model. Betting more per round makes both the wins and the losses larger without improving the chance of a positive result.

Limitations of This Analysis

The model assumes flat betting, independent rounds and fixed published edges. It excludes progressive systems such as Martingale, which change the shape of the distribution by trading frequent small wins for rare large losses without altering the expected loss per unit staked. It excludes side bets, bonus play, loyalty rewards and rakeback. It does not model blackjack, whose edge depends on rules and strategy accuracy, or slots, whose payout structures are far more skewed. Real-world sessions can also end because of time or budget rather than a fixed bet count. Finally, baccarat probabilities are the standard eight-deck figures and may differ slightly for other deck counts.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the chance of winning a casino session?

It depends on the game and the number of bets. For 100 flat even-money bets, our calculations show 26.5% on double-zero roulette, 35.5% on single-zero roulette, 40.5% on the craps Pass Line and 44.7% on the Baccarat Banker bet.

Does a lower house edge change my chance of winning a session?

Yes. Lower edges decay more slowly as bets accumulate. After 500 bets, the chance of finishing ahead is 40.1% on Banker at a 1.06% edge, against 11.1% on a double-zero wheel at 5.26%.

Why do so many players leave a table ahead if the casino has an edge?

Short sessions have wide variance relative to the edge. After 10 bets, roughly a third of players on a roulette wheel are ahead and about a quarter are level. The edge only dominates as the number of bets grows.

Does betting more per round improve my odds of finishing ahead?

Not in a flat-betting model. Bigger bets scale both profits and losses. The probability of finishing ahead depends on the number of bets and the edge, not the unit size, although bigger bets make the expected loss larger in absolute terms.

Can I use these numbers in my own work?

Yes, with attribution. The calculations are described in the methodology section so they can be reproduced, and the underlying house edges are from the Wizard of Odds.
