Return on investment is the truest measure of a tournament player's edge. It divides your net profit by the total you have wagered in buy-ins, so a grinder who turns $10,000 of entries into $12,000 of cashes is running at a 20% ROI. Because it normalizes for buy-in size, ROI lets you compare a $5 micro-stakes grind against a $500 high-roller schedule on the same scale.

Why ROI Needs a Big Sample

Tournament payouts are top-heavy, so most of your profit hides in a handful of deep runs. That makes short-term ROI wildly unreliable — a single final table can lift a losing player's numbers into the green for months. Serious players track thousands of events before trusting the figure. Treat anything under a few hundred tournaments as a preview, not a verdict, and keep logging results to let the true edge emerge.

Turning ROI Into an Hourly Rate

ROI tells you how efficiently your buy-ins convert to profit, but your hourly rate tells you what your time is worth. What is a good ROI in poker tournaments?
For online multi-table tournaments, a sustained ROI of 10-20% is considered strong, and anything above 20% over a large sample is excellent. Live tournaments, with softer fields and slower structures, can support higher ROIs of 30-50% or more for skilled players. The key is sample size: ROI only becomes meaningful over hundreds or thousands of tournaments because a single deep run can swing the number dramatically. A small sample with a huge ROI usually reflects variance, not skill.
How is tournament ROI calculated?
ROI, or return on investment, is your total profit divided by your total buy-ins, expressed as a percentage. If you spent $10,000 in buy-ins and cashed for $12,000, your profit is $2,000 and your ROI is 2,000 / 10,000 = 20%. This calculator computes it automatically from the number of tournaments, your average buy-in including fees, and your total cashes. A positive ROI means you are a long-term winner; a negative one means the buy-ins are outrunning your results.
What is ITM percentage and does it matter?
ITM, or in-the-money percentage, is the share of tournaments in which you finish high enough to get paid. Most MTTs pay the top 10-15% of the field, so an ITM rate near 15% is roughly average. ITM alone does not determine profitability, though — a player who min-cashes often can still lose money, while an aggressive player with a lower ITM but more final tables can crush. Use ITM as a texture stat alongside ROI, not as a standalone measure of success.
How big should my tournament bankroll be?
Tournaments carry far more variance than cash games, so bankroll requirements are larger. A common guideline is 100 buy-ins for standard mid-field MTTs, rising to 200-300 buy-ins for large-field events where you cash less often but win more when you do. Turbo and small-field formats can be played on 50-75 buy-ins. This calculator estimates your recommended bankroll from your average buy-in and a conservative 100-buy-in multiplier that you can scale up for bigger fields.
Why is tournament variance so high?
In an MTT, most of the prize pool is concentrated at the top of the payout structure, so the bulk of your long-term profit comes from a small number of deep runs and wins. That means you can play well and still lose money across dozens or even hundreds of events before a big score arrives. Downswings of 100-plus buy-ins are normal for winning players in large fields. This structural reality is why disciplined bankroll management matters more in tournaments than in almost any other poker format.
How many tournaments do I need to know my true ROI?
Because of the extreme variance, a reliable read on your true ROI usually requires a sample of at least 1,000 to 2,000 tournaments, and large-field grinders may need even more. Below a few hundred events, your measured ROI is dominated by whether you happened to bink a big final table. Track results continuously, treat short-term swings as noise, and only draw firm conclusions about your edge once the sample is large enough to smooth out the outliers.
