How Poker Rake Works

Rake is the primary revenue source for online poker sites. Each cash game hand has a small percentage of the pot taken by the house before the winner receives their chips. This percentage typically ranges from 3.5% to 5%, with a cap that limits the maximum rake per hand.

The cap is the critical factor at higher stakes. At NL100, a 5% rake on a $20 pot would be $1.00, but on a $200 pot it would be $10 — far too much. The cap (typically $2-$3 at NL100) prevents this, meaning the effective rake percentage decreases as pots grow larger. This is why high-stakes players often pay a lower effective rake percentage than micro-stakes players.

Why Rake Matters for Your Win Rate

Your win rate is measured after rake. A player winning 5 big blinds per 100 hands before rake might only net 2-3 bb/100 after rake at micro-stakes. At higher stakes where the cap keeps effective rake lower, more of your pre-rake win rate survives. This is one reason many players find it easier to beat NL50+ than NL2-NL10 despite tougher competition — the rake burden is proportionally smaller.

Rakeback Reduces Your Net Cost

Most poker sites return a portion of rake through VIP programs and rakeback deals. Americas Cardroom offers 27% base rakeback, GGPoker's Fish Buffet scales to 60%, and BC Poker's VIP program reaches 50%. When comparing sites, calculate your net rake (total rake minus rakeback) rather than gross rake alone. A site with higher rake but better rakeback may cost you less overall.

Rake Calculator FAQ

What is rake in online poker?
Rake is the fee that poker sites charge for hosting cash games. It is calculated as a percentage of each pot, taken before the winner receives their chips. Most sites charge between 3.5% and 5% rake, with a cap that limits the maximum amount taken per hand. The cap varies by stake level — lower stakes have lower caps, and higher stakes have higher caps. Understanding rake is essential because it directly reduces your effective win rate.
How is monthly rake calculated in this tool?
This calculator estimates monthly rake by multiplying three factors: the average rake per hand (based on estimated pot size and the site's rake percentage, capped at the site's maximum), the number of hands you play per hour, and the total hours you play per month. The average pot size is estimated at 10 times the big blind, which represents a typical pot in 6-max cash games. Actual rake will vary based on your playing style and table dynamics.
Which poker site has the lowest rake?
PokerStars generally has the lowest rake at micro-stakes (NL2-NL10) due to a lower rake percentage of 3.5-4.5% compared to the standard 5% at other sites. At mid-stakes (NL25+), all major sites converge on 5% rake with varying caps. The cap matters more than the percentage at higher stakes because pots frequently exceed the cap threshold. ACR and Ignition have competitive caps at NL25, while GGPoker and BC Poker have higher caps at NL50.
Does rakeback offset the rake I pay?
Yes, rakeback programs return a percentage of the rake you pay back to your account. The effective rake after rakeback can vary dramatically by site. For example, ACR offers 27% base rakeback, effectively reducing your rake by over a quarter. GGPoker's Fish Buffet can return up to 60% for high-volume players. BC Poker's VIP program scales to 50% rakeback. When comparing sites, always factor in the rakeback program to determine your true net rake cost.
