NJ Online Poker Timeline

Feb 2013

Governor Chris Christie signs A2578 into law, authorizing online gambling (poker and casino) in New Jersey. The bill allows Atlantic City casinos to offer internet gaming to players physically in NJ. This makes NJ the third state (after Nevada and Delaware) to legalize online poker.

Nov 21, 2013

New Jersey launches online poker. PokerStars NJ, WSOP.com NJ (888poker), Borgata Poker (partypoker network), and others go live simultaneously. The launch is the most significant event in US online poker since Black Friday (April 15, 2011), which shut down PokerStars, Full Tilt, and Ultimate Bet for US players.

2014–2016

NJ's online poker market grows but faces challenges. Player pools are NJ-only (ring-fenced), limiting tournament sizes and cash game traffic. Revenue stabilizes around $20-25M annually. PokerStars' entry in March 2016 — previously banned due to Black Friday — is a major milestone and boosts traffic significantly.

2017–2018

NJ becomes the first state to join a multi-state online poker compact. Initially sharing player pools with Nevada and Delaware, the agreement (later formalized as MSIGA) allows WSOP.com/888poker to combine tables across state lines. Tournament prize pools immediately increase.

2019–2020

MSIGA expands the NJ player pool. COVID-19 in 2020 drives a massive surge in online poker — NJ online poker revenue spikes 100%+ as live poker rooms close. The pandemic proves online poker's value as a complement to live play and drives record handle.

2021–2023

Michigan joins MSIGA (2023), further expanding the shared player pool. NJ poker revenue stabilizes at $30-40M annually. The three-network structure (WSOP/888, PokerStars, BetMGM/partypoker) is firmly established. BetMGM's cross-sell from sports betting and casino drives new poker players to the tables.

2024–2026

West Virginia joins MSIGA, adding another state to the shared pool. NJ remains the anchor market — the largest population (9.3M) in the MSIGA compact. Sunday tournament guarantees regularly exceed $200K-$500K on the WSOP/888 network. NJ online poker has matured from a novelty into a permanent part of the state's gaming ecosystem.

Live Poker in New Jersey

NJ isn't just online — Atlantic City has some of the best live poker on the East Coast.

Borgata Poker Room

The largest poker room on the East Coast. 85+ tables, daily tournaments, major festival stops (Borgata Poker Open, WPT events). The gold standard for live poker in NJ. Connected to BetMGM/Borgata online via shared loyalty programs.

Resorts Atlantic City

PokerStars LIVE at Resorts AC hosts poker events in partnership with PokerStars NJ. A solid mid-size poker room with daily tournaments and cash games. PokerStars online players can deposit/withdraw at the Resorts cage.

Harrah's Resort

Caesars property in AC with a poker room connected to the WSOP.com brand. WSOP Circuit events are held here periodically. Cash at cage for WSOP.com online players.

Other AC Rooms

Tropicana, Hard Rock, and Ocean Casino Resort all offer live poker. AC's concentration of poker rooms means you can walk between properties and find the best game running on any given night.

The NJ Division of Gaming Enforcement regulates all online poker in the state. Every licensed site offers deposit limits, loss limits, session time limits, and self-exclusion.

NJ Online Poker FAQ

Is online poker legal in New Jersey?
Yes. NJ legalized online poker in February 2013 and launched on November 21, 2013. It is regulated by the New Jersey Division of Gaming Enforcement (DGE). NJ is the largest US online poker market and a founding member of the MSIGA shared liquidity compact.
What poker sites are available in NJ?
Five major poker rooms: WSOP.com NJ (888 network, MSIGA), PokerStars NJ (ring-fenced), BetMGM Poker NJ (partypoker network), Borgata Poker NJ (same network as BetMGM), and 888poker NJ (same network as WSOP). Each offers a different experience — sign up for 2-3 to maximize your options.
What is MSIGA and how does it affect NJ poker?
MSIGA (Multi-State Internet Gaming Agreement) allows NJ to share online poker player pools with Nevada, Delaware, Michigan, and West Virginia. On WSOP.com and 888poker NJ, you play against players from all five states — creating larger tournaments and more active cash games. PokerStars NJ and BetMGM Poker NJ are NOT in MSIGA (NJ-only pools).
How old do you have to be?
You must be 21+ and physically located in New Jersey to play real-money online poker. Geolocation technology verifies your position each session.
What stakes are available?
Cash games range from $0.01/$0.02 (micro-stakes) to $25/$50 (high-stakes) on WSOP.com. Tournament buy-ins range from $1 freerolls to $500+ major events. Most traffic is concentrated at $0.05/$0.10 through $1/$2 NLH cash games and $5-$50 tournament buy-ins.
Can I play poker on my phone?
Yes. All NJ poker sites offer mobile apps for iOS and Android. WSOP.com, PokerStars, and BetMGM all have dedicated mobile poker apps. PokerStars' mobile app is generally considered the best. Desktop clients are also available and preferred by multi-tablers.
How do deposits work?
NJ poker sites accept bank transfers (ACH), debit cards, PayPal, Play+ prepaid cards, and cash at casino cage (Borgata for BetMGM/Borgata, Resorts for PokerStars, Caesars properties for WSOP). PayPal is the most popular option — fast deposits and same-day withdrawals.
Is the player pool big enough?
Yes, especially on MSIGA networks. WSOP.com/888poker combined with NV/MI/DE/WV provides 200-400 cash game players at peak hours and tournaments regularly breaking $100K+ in guarantees. PokerStars NJ (ring-fenced) has 100-200 peak players — smaller but sustainable. BetMGM/Borgata (NJ-only) has the strongest NJ cash game traffic.
What about live poker in NJ?
New Jersey has some of the best live poker in the US. Borgata (Atlantic City) runs the largest poker room on the East Coast. Resorts AC, Harrah's, and other AC properties offer live poker. Many players combine online and live — playing online from home and visiting AC for major live tournaments.
Are online poker winnings taxed in NJ?
Yes. Federal tax applies to all poker winnings. NJ state income tax (1.4-10.75%) also applies. Tournament wins of $5,000+ (net of buy-in) trigger W-2G withholding at 24% federal + NJ state. Cash game winnings must be self-reported. Consult a tax professional — poker tax is complex.
What responsible gambling tools are available?
All NJ poker sites offer deposit limits, loss limits, session time limits, self-exclusion, and cooling-off periods. The NJ DGE operates a statewide self-exclusion program. Call 1-800-GAMBLER (1-800-522-4700) — available 24/7.

New Jersey Online Poker — The Complete Picture

New Jersey is where US online poker was reborn. After Black Friday devastated the industry in April 2011 — shutting down PokerStars, Full Tilt Poker, and Ultimate Bet for American players — NJ became the first major state to rebuild legal, regulated online poker. The November 2013 launch wasn't just a business event; it was a statement that the US online poker dream wasn't dead.

Twelve years later, NJ remains the anchor market. The MSIGA shared liquidity agreement means NJ's 9.3 million residents power the largest player pool in the US compact — and when you sit at a WSOP.com table in New Jersey, you're playing against players from five states. Sunday tournament guarantees of $200K-$500K+ are commonplace. WSOP Online Bracelet events draw thousands of entries. The player pool that seemed questionably small in 2013 is now robust and sustainable.

For NJ poker players in 2026, the strategy is clear: sign up for WSOP.com (MSIGA tournaments + bracelets), PokerStars (best software + widest games), and BetMGM or Borgata (best cash game traffic). Stack the welcome bonuses ($2,000+ in combined deposit matches). Play MSIGA tournaments on WSOP.com for the biggest prize pools. Grind Zoom on PokerStars for volume. Sit at BetMGM cash tables for the softest competition from casino cross-sell players. And when you want to play live, Borgata's 85-table poker room is an hour down the Parkway.
