What counts as low rake in online poker?
The industry standard for online cash games is 5% of the pot with a cap that steps down as stakes increase — typically around $3 at low stakes and $1 or less at high stakes, where the cap does the real work. Tournaments are quoted separately as a fee on top of the buy-in, usually 8–10% at low buy-ins and 5–6% at higher ones. Anything at or below those numbers is competitive. But the headline figure is close to meaningless on its own, because rakeback, bonus release and promotional redistribution can cut what you actually pay by a third or more.
How does rakeback change the effective rate?
Rakeback returns a percentage of the rake you generate, so it multiplies directly against the headline rate. At a 5% cap with 27% rakeback, your effective rake is 5% × 0.73 = 3.65%. Push rakeback to 65% through a volume program and the same table charges you 1.75%.
