What Is Blocking Bet?
A blocking bet, sometimes called a 'block bet,' is typically used on the river by a player with a modest but showdown-worthy hand who wants to see a cheap showdown without facing a larger bet from position. By betting first with a small sizing, the player controls the maximum amount they can lose on that street, since a raise from the opponent is usually easy to fold to. This tactic trades some potential value for reduced risk and is most common when a player is uncertain about the strength of their hand relative to their opponent's range.
Examples
A player with a weak two pair bets a small blocking bet on the river to avoid facing a large bet from a stronger hand.
Out of position with a marginal made hand, a player blocks with a bet sized at 25% of the pot instead of checking.
Strategy Tips
Use blocking bets when you have a hand strong enough to want a showdown but too weak to comfortably call a large bet from your opponent. Size your blocking bet small enough that folding to a raise is not costly, typically 20-33% of the pot. Be aware that observant opponents can exploit blocking bets by raising them for value or as a bluff, so avoid using this tactic too predictably. Consider simply checking instead of blocking if your hand can profitably call a range of bet sizes.
