What Is Blank?
A blank is a card that doesn't complete any obvious draws, pair the board, or otherwise change the strategic picture of the hand. When a blank appears, players who had the betting lead before the card typically continue applying pressure since ranges are largely unaffected. Recognizing blanks versus scare cards is an important skill for reading board runouts and deciding whether to continue barreling.
Examples
On a Q-7-2 rainbow flop, a 4 on the turn is generally considered a blank since it changes little about the hand.
A player continues their continuation bet on the turn after a blank card falls.
Strategy Tips
Use blank cards as opportunities to continue betting for value or as a bluff, since your range advantage from previous streets typically remains intact. Be careful labeling a card a blank too quickly -- always double check it doesn't complete a backdoor draw or pair a scare card for certain hand types. Study how blanks affect different board textures, since what counts as a blank on a dry board may not be one on a wet, coordinated board. Combine blank-card reads with opponent tendencies to decide on bet sizing after a blank falls.
