March Results/April Goals

Pretty excellent month overall.
nl cash: $86
plo cash: -$24
MTTs: -$29
Stakeaments: -$32
Rakeback: $84

Total: $85

Got back into the grind after a short break and it seems to have helped a lot.

I'm really bad at MTTs, so I'll keep playing a few, but mostly I just need to keep watching some videos and reading up on MTT play.

I really enjoyed my limited grind at plo. I will keep studying and playing some plo for sure; aiming for 5k hands of 5plo this month.

I'm rolled for and moving back to 25nl, and plan to keep working on my game and play > 12k hands in April.

Another week in review

Another successful week! The first few days of school after spring break are rough, lots of work to get done and it didn't leave much time for grinding. I was only able to get in one thousand nl hands and about the same number of PLO hands. I did get PT3 Omaha, so now I have tracking software for PLO. I also talked to a mid-stakes PLO grinding buddy who said he'd be willing to review a video, so the plan is to make a video this week and go over it with him sometime soon.

School study mode has been going fine, and I think if I keep grinding it hard I'll be able to earn another 4.0o0o0o0o0. Poker studying has also been good. I have been critically (not passively) watching a lot of videos lately and really feel good about my game. On the PLO front, having already watched 2x6 and hellomaha, I decided I'd start watching the Galfond and Whitelime series just to hear some high stakes thought processes. I've been reading "Winning Poker Tournament one hand at a time" and I'm about 2/3 of the way through it. I have also started the "MTT principles" series here at DC and watched the first 2 episodes this past week. And for nl I've been watching "Real Life Micro NL Grinder" bc WoT is a genius, and re-watching WoT's "Mathematics of NL".

Results were good this week. I was able to get to 10k hands at 10nl (see last blog post) and I'm gearing up to move back to 25nl. I had some disappointing results in PLO but it's mainly variance as I am confident in my decisions. I played some MTTs today, bricking the Sunday Storm on PS, and bubbled the early antes $10k guaranteed on FTP. I double cashed in the early doubles on FTP, which results in a small bonus, which is nice.

I recorded my MTT session today, and got 2 solid hours where I had 4 tables. My plan is to make it record audio and make 2 videos and hopefully get some feedback from some MTT sickos.

Looking forward, this week will likely be light on the grind. I'll try to get some sessions in, but school will be busy and tbh, I get lazy after achieving iron man for the month. I'm heading back to Denver next Friday as I'm going to play satellites for the Heartland Poker Tour Blackhawk stop. I qualified last year and made day two, busting about 20 spots from the bubble. If I qualify, the Main Event is the weekend after. plz to run goot!

By far, the most lol hand of the week:

10k hands at 10nl; back to 25nl!

I just finished my 10k hands at 10nl. For those who don't know, I was playing very badly at the end of 2010 and the first 6 weeks of this year. I took a 3-week break and decided to move down to 10nl to retool/relearn. I had the bankroll to continue at 25nl, but I was hoping for a nice boost in confidence and to get back to the basics/winning plays. I never played more than 4-tables, I really was committed to not playing when I wasn't really focused or excited to play, and I spent a lot of time studying as well. I won at 8bb/100 over the 10k hand and ran pretty significantly under ev, so I feel really good about the results and my play.

Week in review; spring break

Didn't get too much grinding in this week. Just over 3k hands of nl. A few short PLO sessions, a couple of MTTs and some lolive poker. Nothing stellar results wise, but played pretty well overall.

Had a lot of fun with my family and friends on break though. I golfed a few times, went hiking and got to spend time with my dog. I spent some great time and had fantastic meals with my parents. I also had a lot of fun with friends I rarely get to see. life ev > poker volume, so a very successful week. Time to buckle down and grind school and poker for the rest of the semester.

Didn't get to play Saturday or Sunday as I got very ill late Friday night. Woke up feeling pretty good today (Sunday), but had to pack and drive back to school, so I didn't get a session in today as I felt tired this afternoon/evening. I'm really trying to only play when I feel good/focused as my results have been trrbl when I make myself put in volume.

Donkaments, nl, plo, home game with friends, hiking, etc

Monday I hit the grind hard. Played miniFTOPS #25 the 6-max HA event and never won a pot of any significance, busted shortly after the 2nd break. Put in some hands at 10nl as well, playing about a thousand hands. Had quite the dynamic going with a very loose aggro villain.

First we played this hand: Full Tilt Poker $0.05/$0.10 No Limit Hold'em - 6 players - View hand 1234494

Final Pot: $46.06
BTN shows A of diamonds 4 of diamonds (a flush, Ace high)
Hero shows 9 of clubs T of spades (two pair, Tens and Nines)
BTN wins $44.06
(Rake: $2.00)

Luckily he stuck around and gifted some back:

He was two tabling 10nl, and after busting one of his 10nl tables, he jumped up to 50nl. I have the roll for 25nl, and I could justify playing 50nl, but I sold 45% quickly to some friends and was able to secure the seat to his left.

Felt good to sit back at a 50nl table (haven't since October) and run goot.

I then decided to play some PLO. Been grinding some 5plo trying to get my feet wet and I'm starting to get a feel for how the game plays. I 6-tabled yesterday and it was fun but I'm still playing too loose from early position and opening too wide on the button and BvB.

Then I played a home game with my friends last night. Ran hot to start the night but ran a few too many 4-barrel bluffs and got coolered twice, ending the evening up only a few bbs. It was fun as I don't get to see my friends often when I'm at school. We play a 72 bounty and I ran a nice 4-barrel on the 2nd to last hand of the night and got a station-y villain to fold QJ on KQ963, slightly over-betting the river. LOLive poker bluffs are fun, especially when you have to show.

Woke up early this morning to go hiking. 3 of my buddies from the poker game, their dog, my dog and I went down to cottonwood canyon and hiked a pretty fun ~4mile loop. My one buddy who is an Army Ranger is back in town after a tour in Afghanistan and it was awesome playing poker, hiking and catching up with him.

Also makes me miss my brother, who is also in the Army and stationed in Germany. I hope to get over there in the next few years to see him and use his place as a hub to travel a bit around Europe.

Poker today was light. I was pretty tired after staying out late last night and waking up early, so I just 4-tabled 10nl for a bit to get Iron Man points and then called it a day. Had an interesting HU match starting a table vs a 'reg' and I ran goot and booked a nice win today. I've got over 7k hands at 10nl now this month and my confidence is high, so once I hit 10k hands, I'm heading back to 25nl.

I'm done rambling now, gl all!

Week in review and member video reviews

A really good week overall! Finished up mid-terms and enjoying the beginning of spring break.

Poker went well. Played just over 3k hands of 10nl 6max. Played about 1k hands of 5PLO, down 3.5bi but played really well. Got staked into miniFTOPS #4, bricked. Played miniFTOPS #22 today and bricked. Gotta win flips and I didn't do that. I did KO CuteIsWhatIAIM4 in the miniFTOPS today, which was pretty great. Gonna play the HA tomorrow and a few of the 6max events next weekend.

Will continue to get PLO and 6max hands in. Ready to move back to 25nl, but gonna get the full 10k hands at 10nl before moving back up.

Month to date nl: ~ 8bb/100 over 6k hands is a good start. Dropping down to reevaluate and re-tool my game seems to be working. I feel really calm, focused and confident when playing right now. Here's to staying that way.

Also, Colorado not making the NCAA tourney is a disgrace! Feel really bad for the seniors on this team :(

That's all for now, glgl.

March 11, 2011

Here we go

First blog entry! It's Friday, March 11th, 2011 and it's the first day of spring break.

My name is James. I live in Colorado and I'm a student, studying entrepreneurship, minoring in micro-stakes 6-max cash games.

Been playing poker for years; Moneymaker boom, high school $5 home game SNGs. Started taking online poker seriously in Dec 2009 when I joined DC and got a staking/coaching deal to play 25nl from some mid-stakes grinders. Started off sucking (dropped to 10nl and worked really hard), and with coaching/DC I improved a lot. I took a few shots at 50nl (none of them went well) and actually ended up playing poorly/losing a bunch at the end of 2010/beginning of this year. Ended the deal in early February, took a few weeks off and I'm on my own now. I'm rolled for 25nl but due to playing poorly, decided drop to 10nl and do a lot of video watching/studying to reevaluate and relearn.

Graph since joining DC: 1.4bb/100 winner over 180k. Decent winner at 10nl and lower. Loser at 50nl and a .04bb/100 winner at 25nl over 125k hands, what up rakeback? Obv I don't play a lot of volume, 10k-15k hands on an average month. I can't effectively play more than 4 tables and I don't like rush poker. I get good grades, have a good social life and still mix in some poker, so I'm really happy with it. I really think I'm capable of plugging more leaks and grinding small stakes relatively soon.
