It is probably because you are not bluffing enough to protect your big hands. You need to bluff so people can't setmine or call you with gutshots profitability.

I would raise more pre, pot size + 1-2 BBs, and yes raise the turn.

How often to fire c-bets?

I bet until they make it clear that Cbetting won't be profitable. Then I start pot controlling with bottom pair and a highs checking them down. If they are calling me with second pair, gut shot ...
