Enjoyed the video. I have a couple questions though.
Is there a reason all of the selected hands are from the blinds? I'm just wondering what sort of hand strength you'd want opening from MP or LP. Hopefully some hands like that will come up eventually since you say position is possibly even more important than in NLHE.
Also you talk about raising to only 1/2 pot. Does that mean you should minraise (or slightly more) when opening even when in a blind steal position?

Very good video!
I was also confused about the "not-pot" bet/raise. Did you mean preflop open raise? It sounded like, but that doesn't make much sense to open raise less than the pot. Or did you mean preflop 3bets? That at least would make sense to me, but who am I
Apart from that I'm really looking forward to the rest of the series. I love the setup an I like PLO, so your vids are perfect!

Great, I'm looking forward to the rest of the series airing as well so we can get away from this boring preflop stuff =)
In terms of not-pot raising - I was referring to open raising, yes. I find that keeping the pot smaller preflop gives you more room postflop to work and thus more of an edge to exploit. Some people do this, some people don't... just food for thought and it works quite nicely for me with my style of putting a lot of pressure on my opponents in position.

Whenever you make a bet, you want to think about what you are trying to accomplish.
Is it a hand like AAJ9? Then you probably want it HU - go ahead and pot it from the button. Is it QJT8ds? We'll make a lot of very nice draws, go ahead and juice the pot up for some 3-4 way action...
Is it total crap like 68JA from the button but with very tight players in the blinds? Raise the pot so you can steal the blinds or win with a C-bet on the flop most of the time... There's always reasons to raise different amounts, my conversations with Emil are just intended to give you some insight into how to think about your options.

interesting you take the variable raise size approach. does that not make your hand easy to read? that might be dependent on how tough the games are. also I guess it's harder to hand read when you have 4 cards. my reasoning for wanting to pot it when opening from LP would be to just steal the blinds a good deal of the time.

Thanks guys that was a great vid, I've watched pretty much everything available at online training sites dealing with PLO and this is format is the best and easiest way to follow and learn quickly.
Really looking forward to postflop play, because i think like most holdem players this is where i am having most trouble.
Also looking forward to see how emil's play develops with the help of duck.
About half way through so ill come back with some specific q's when im done.

Very good comment. However as has been said, doesn't it make you easier to read? I think even at PLO100 some people would notice when you open to different amounts with different hands. How can you avoid this?

So based on your preflop recommendations, what type of VPIP/PFR numbers should I be looking at? It almost seems like I should be playing tighter in PLO than NLHE.
Also, I thought you mentioned that Emil should PokerStove some hands to get an idea of hot-and-cold values. Is there really a PokerStove for PLO? If not, what's the next best thing? I just use twodimes.net/poker now.

I remember Vanessa saying somewhere that about 26/18 would be pretty solid preflop numbers but I'd wait for her to confirm before taking my word.

Something like that is fine, a bit tighter is fine as well, and at some rock-ish tables, I would consider opening up to in the 30's vpip and 3-betting and cold-calling in position a fair amount.

meh. i don't think people really notice what's going on... and it has more to do with position than hand strength anyways. Like I'll open AA96s to half pot if I'm UTG just because I think people tend to call or fold based on their hand and not how much I raised (Especially in position) and so I don't really want to create a huge pot OOP which would make my hand hard to play. So I don't think it's really a problem, people will just think you raise random amounts (and make sure to occasionally switch it up if you DO think they're catching on).

Watched the first two eps of this series tonight and its looks great! Its given me a pretty solid foundation to start some PLO play. Emil's HSNL background brings a lot to this series and Vanessa makes me lol
