I play at poker spots all over NYC and this is typical. Most online players will fail to adapt to this type of play.

Hehe. She also sighed and checkraised him all-in when she had pocket aces and he had top pair. She didn't only sigh when she had the goods though - she sighed and folded the river when he did the old Johnny Chan tarp on her the one time. So her sighing range was balanced, but mostly skewed towards value :)

She cashed out for a bit over $3800 (so 1250bbs!) and looked thoroughly bored the whole time. Don't know what she bought in for, but she certainly cleaned up.

The game was totally incredible.

Hehe. I had another great scooper vs the guy who was MP1 there. I overlimped A9h42h, he raised from the SB, there were 4 to the flop, which came AKKhh, so I call with my pair + weak flushdraw + 2nd nut backdoor low, turn was a nine, so now I have 6 outs to the boat, he bets again, I call again, everyone else folds, river is an offsuit 4, so I have 4 pairs (really AAKK9) with no low possible, he bets again and I think I'm probably losing but have to call getting 9 to 1 and he had......

He did indeed seem to minbet flop and turn and call if he had a pair or draw. Then he would ben the river about 1/3rd pot with a pair or just shove sometimes. He was min raising every unopened pot and min 3-betting (almost) every raise so he was pretty balanced preflop also.

I moved right down to start from 2NL again and try to learn and improve and prove to myself that I can beat each stake as I move up. 2NL went ok. 5NL was a total disaster, then started to go ok, now has turned into a shitshow again.

I'm practically at my wit's end. Some of the plays I see are so bad, but unfortunately so to are some of the plays I make.

Yeah he was limp/folding pre a lot and check/folding the flop a lot too. I wouldn't normally iso with any sort of pretty hand - I usually just go with 77+ or two cards ten or better as a default "value iso" range.

Also remember that you can make sick bluffs vs this type of player because you can bluff a stupidly small sizing and they have an inelastic range that is either calling or folding. This means that you can make bluffs with non-showdownable hands that are profitable because you can make it 1/10 the size of the pot. As with everything make sure you pick the right player! good luck :)

Mathematically what matters is not what your rakeback percentage is, but the net rake (ie gross rake - rakeback). Imagine if the gross rake was 99% uncapped. I could give you a great rakeback deal and you'd still be being shafted because the net rake would still be high.

iPoker gross rake is almost twice stars rake so even if you have a nice rb deal (and I do), the difference in rake is a lot lot smaller than many people realise. But as I say, I also play on iPoker.

60% rb is better than like 10% you get at stars though, so mathematically, you are still better off at ipoker imo.
Table selection...i dont think you need to up till 25nl, most players are fish anyway.

Buby I also play on iPoker. rb helps but the rake being almost 2x stars rake + table selection being much harder given how bad the lobby + waiting lists suck make it not as clear a choice as it first appears in my opinion.

All standard suck outs except hand 1. Im not sure about his range for calling here and without doing any quick math - make sure you are priced into calling c/shoves here vs his entire range (In a vacuum i wouldnt include any Tx hands tbh - though if you knew he is a spazzy fish, id fire a few in.)

its all about the hand you play, this moment. Run good, run bad = in your head.

Best slow roll punishment in my favor has been a 500bb pot where I got it in with top set on KQT and when I 3-bet shoved the guy chat boxed "thank you" and then called with the nut straight. Of course I boated up on the river and trolled him pretty hard for being a douche.

Lol you mean the 15% 3bettors and 4betting/5betting battles BVB? Easy enough to deal with theyre funny when you get used to them. Plenty of fish on Ipoker and nice RB.

Favourite Ipoker moment, SB limps I check with Q3o

Flop comes Q73r, SB checks, I misclick "max" and shove 150bb into a 2bb pot. Villain tanks and calls with 67s

Made me laugh a lot :)

Comment on Goals by huntse

That list is "the poker mindset". The idea is that these are seven important traits to work towards having the correct mindset to succeed at poker. I'm working on all of these at once and I have to say so far the transformation has been dramatic.

My goals are actually a different list, which I am keeping private for now. They are concrete and very specific and measurable. Progress so far has been faster than I expected, so I am just a bit more than a third of the way towards completing goal 1, which is looking like being one of the most time-consuming on the list. Goal 2 should be about a quarter as hard as goal 1, then goal 3 and 4 are really going to take a while. I expect it will take at least 9 months to complete these four. If and when I complete the first four goals I'm going to blog about them at some length.

What's important is not the goals, however, but the way in which I'm working towards them, which is by focussing on improving my game away from the table, and on improving my mental game using the poker mindset and the learning model and other stuff from Jared Tendler's book.

Right, so last night I had my first go at this and it was really enlightening. One thing I've noticed is that there is an enormous gap between what I come up with by default reaction, and what I can do when I give myself time to think. My emotional control is also way better, so even though I was very tired, I played pretty well and avoided the really catastrophic mistakes that plague my very bad sessions.

You're completely right of course. Whew. OK, this requires a big change. I'm going to take a few days off playing and then I think I'm still going to blog but focus only on the mental/emotional side, and not look at my graph or my results and certainly not post about them.

2 tables would be a good idea also.

These results-orientated blog posts are pretty much the worst thing you can do for your poker career.
Everyone on here is at it at.

Seriously, stop caring about the money and whether you're up or down. When I started the 50k challenge I just stopped looking at all at my results, everything. It is really liberating for your game.

I have filtered Poker Tracker so it only shows October, so can analyse hands I played but don't know immediate results. I have no idea how much I'm up or down (this probably violates the rules of the challenge! but who cares).

I have not looked at my cashier since November 1. Try it. It's so easier not to tilt and just focus on hand reading when you're not thinking "fuck I've only made $14 in the last 10,000 hands".

I've read your forum posts and you know what you're talking about. You're one of the best micro-playing posters. Already you have more than enough knowledge to beat higher levels.

Why are you limiting your learning potential by stressing over $100?

Why are you wasting time thinking "oh no, my beautiful graph is going to be destroyed"?

Why not just play two tables of 25nl and focus on note-taking and hand-reading? You're winrate will go.... up.

Turn off the targeter and use the force, Luke.

Although he was 80/0, Villain was pretty aggressive postflop so I don't think we can always fold to a checkraise on the turn btw. But with a straight on the flop and then the board pairing I think I should have folded.

I think that's more of a reason to 4 bet preflop since you two have built up an aggressive history between each other.

Postflop, I think I either prefer to c/c the river, or if I am going to bet, bet like $3.50 to get looked up by worse Ax hands, KQ/KJ, etc.

Yeah normally I would too. This was the third orbit in a row this happened. The first I raised, the 3-bet, I folded, tge second I raised, he 3-bet I 4-bet bluffed with something like ATo (I forget exactly) and he folded. So this time I decided to flat.

With the AK hand, I think I prefer 4 betting preflop. On the flop we are actually doing very well equity wise vs his range. I think the river we actually have the best hand the majority of the time and it's actually a good spot to bet to induce or to check call.

This is because I don't think someone that aggro (and these stakes) is good enough to check back a strong overpair or better on the turn.

Could be. I'm experimenting with it as an exploitive play against opponents who are very bluffy and aggro and we have a pretty aggressive dynamic already. I have to have pretty much the nuts and there has to be a few hands out there that he plausibly could have that are pretty strong. So here, this guy was super bluffy and aggro, but could easily find a call with a K or a flush because my line looks so ridiculous. As it was he very very nearly found a call with pocket sevens, which would have been terrible obviously.

On Monday I had a similar hand where I jammed 200bbs into about a 60bb pot with the nut flush on a K-high unpaired board and the opponent found a call with a set of kings.

Obviously you're going to get fewer calls than a more normal betsize so whether it's the most +EV play depends on how wide the inelastic part of his range is relative to the pot and that's hard to say exactly.

Why would you consider raising here?

I think he can have loads of Ax hands in his range.
What do you do if he bets a blank river?
What do you do if he bets the flush on river if it hits?

Before I get flamed, the big iso-raise sizing and the 4-bet jam were both tailored to this particular BB. He was calling any size bet pre (within reason I suppose) with any Ax, Kx or Qx suited or unsuited. I had been taking him to the cleaners and had a feeling that he might be about to crack and therefore would call my shove with any hand he was prepared to 3-bet with.

Yeah, I'm going to be stripping it back more. The showdown stats are allowing me to mislead myself into making lots of mistakes. I'll probably just go vpip/pfr/3b/steal/hands I might add fenders suggested "call open" stat. Once I'm using those well I might add more. I use a big ass popup though with all manner of stuff in it, which becomes useful when you have a few hundred hands on someone. I also blank any stats where the sample size is too small.

One stat I find useful is the "MT" stat. If you have tpablescanner then it counts up all the tables the guy is at. Really helps to get in someone's head if you see they at 12/10/4 and sitting at 16 tables. Having said that it's not working for me right now because I'm using hm2 and tablescanner is not done yet.

We are obviously bluff catching here, and Ive done the same things many times versus maniacs. We want him to barrel off, why raise and fold him? Or worse, why raise and let him 3-bet bluff us?

Its always fun to catch these maniacs after 3 barrels, however the board actually ran out pretty well for you hehe.

Why? He's shown he likes bluffing. I beat his bluffs, so I want to allow him to keep bluffing. If I raise he calls with hands that beat me and folds hands I beat but would (as shown here) put money into the pot if I let him.

Remember the reasons for betting. I should only bet if I think I can get a better hand to fold or a worse hand to call. I'm not going to get called by worse if I raise flop or turn (if he called pre with a second pair type hand like pocket jacks its not likely he's now going to float a flop raise and turn barrell) and I'm certainly not getting a better ace or a 5 to fold. So I don't see how I can raise. The same thinking is why I don't raise the river either - a worse hand is not going to call me 50% of the time.

What first made me suspicious at the time was his flop bet sizing. He's the sort of player who would bluff into a 6-way pot (even though that's suicidal obviously) and that bet size just didn't feel like it could possibly be for value. I mean, if you have a set, two pair or a strong ace you need to bet big here to charge heart and straight draws, and if he has a draw or most other one pair hands himself then I'm ahead already.

I had moved up to 25NL, but I realised during a downswing that I needed to work on my fundamentals a lot, so have moved right down to 2NL and am regrinding from there.

Yeah. I'm just at the micros at the moment and those stats are certainly ones I'm going to re-introduce to my hud once I really feel I'm getting the full benefit of what I have.

Oh, I should have said the other thing I've done is blank things out where I don't have enough samples.

Using fold to cbet OOP + IP (2 different stats) is really helpful imo. People play really different (some fold to cbets more IP over huge samples... so weird)

I don't know what level you play at, but I made sure to have cbet/fcbet and turn cbet/tcbet in mine. Especially with the more nitty players, it is really helpful.

I like both flop raise and the call. Nh sir.

The sick thing is that from 2NL to 50nl it plays the same then from 50nl-400nl it gets slightly harder and only at 1knl do you get regulars who adjust properly (according to a friend who plays 400nl and to blah234 in one of his interviews I am pretty sure, might have been grindcore though)

Yeah, that's often true. Certainly if a passive player raises you on the turn you're toast unless you have the nuts. However, I see a lot of crazy people playing 2NL. There are aggro maniacs at 2NL too.

$2 NL 6-max (although I do play some FR too) at the moment. I feel at the moment 6-max is challenging me more and I'm learning more.

Before I was switching up and down between 5NL and 10NL. Now I'm going to focus and make sure my game is really solid before I go to 5NL, and then when I'm feeling good there, then up further.
