The Big Race
Ran my first race yesterday, only a 2 mile and despite cramping up during and saying I would never run another race after I probably will. However I can't see myself doing anything longer than a 5k, I don't know how Rob runs marathons. A couple of thoughts from yesterday
Continuous effort - not strength or intelligence - is the key to unlocking our potential.

- I mainly just run on my treadmill but running a street course is way tougher, the breathing is different and I had no idea how to pace myself. I ended up finishing in 13:45 and while my goal was 13:30 I'm still very happy with it. However, I ran the first mile in 6:30 and really had no idea how fast I was going, it was obviously a bit too fast. Also, hills are brutal on the street I think I prefer running uphill to downhill as I found it easier to control my breathing.
- Not much is more humbling than getting passed by an old man with about a half mile to go and a father/daughter coming down the home stretch.
- If I run again I really need to learn what to eat/drink before hand so I don't cramp up. I'm guessing it cost me between 10-15 seconds but I had no idea how to prepare. I ended up eating some watermelon and drinking a bottle of water about 90 minutes before my race, had no idea if it was good or bad.
- It was cool having people sit on their lawns and cheer you on and the people lightly spraying you with their hose was welcomed on a 90 degree day.
Continuous effort - not strength or intelligence - is the key to unlocking our potential.

the only advice i have is that athletes usually "carb up" before an event
so like tons of pasta ect. i think

Whole wheat pasta the night before helps so much imo.

"However I can't see myself doing anything longer than a 5k..."
Funny thing... I said the EXACT same thing 5 half-marathons ago.

"I don't know how Rob runs marathons."
Very slowly. That's the secret. :)
