2010

So it turns out that I was actually a winner in 2010. About a 2BB/100 winner actually, it didn't feel like it, especially with a brutal 20bi downswing in December where I ran bad & spewed.

Time to look at that stat, realise that I'm still OK at this even with incredibly reduced amounts of time that I have to spend on this stuff..
Full time job, part time university, gf, more time at the gym this year..

2011 is going to be awesome.

Mentality on Variance

Just finished a ridiculous 4.5 hour session where I just ran into tops of peoples ranges ALL THE FREAKING TIME (maybe not, I'll have to review just to make sure I wasn't value cutting myself oh, every hand :P).

Found it interesting that as I got stuck about 4-5 BIs my mentality changed into that of a 'stuck' person. Now this is really retarded because my BR was at the same point that it was at oh, 3 days ago before I won money. So like, wtf am I doing!? And now even though I ended the session stuck maybe 1.5 BIs I'm moderately happy since I was stuck what like 6, even though really it was a losing session.

I'll probably feel better about all this after I review hands and figure out what's going on, but it was just interesting to see how I responded to losing and  variance. As annoyed as I was with the immediate results of the session I feel like I kept my cool & played pretty well... I guess that's an improvement (again, we'll reserve judgement until I review the HHs)

Sigh. I'll get better at this one day.

I should take a few days off poker, all this mouse using at work on my day job AND at home playing internet poker is not doing me any favors!!

Social Network

Got invited to go have dinner with some friends, and to watch The Social Network. Or is it 'Social Network'? Interesting that some people try to grind out a living at 35k a year, or 100k a year whatever depending on your line of work, or play poker for similar amounts of money, when some people try to make money, and REAL money, in millions and billions, in business ventures and what not.

I guess my question is, WHY do some people go down the invention/business path and some people for the safe jobs? Are some people just born to be risk takers (obv you have to have the right talents etc).. or is it something that you just luck into? Would the nosebleed stakes poker players that came up in no time (think Durrrr, Greenplastic, Krantz, etc.) be as successful if they had found poker post-boom say, in 2008? Or would they have decided that something else was worth their time instead?

It's a good movie though, I found the main protagonist (or is he the villain?) to be not as annoying a character was many have mentioned to me, just seemed like a person that was extremely inept at... life, and was portrayed as someone that was extremely driven and felt wronged by society for not acknowledging his brilliance prior to his success.

Life is weird/difficult sometimes.

200NL, swings, getting better

So I got in about 20k hands at 200NL after 'taking a shot' at it, which led to a series of up/down swings that were mostly not too eventful.

I discovered a few things about myself - I feel happier now that I'm playing 200NL with a full time job, where the money is really secondary, and that I feel like I'm making good decisions (for the most part). I've had a few -5BI days which just made me go 'oh well, meh' rather than it making me pretty sad which I had experienced when I had moved up to 200NL or 400NL for the first time a couple of years ago. I guess it helps that I have been there and done that before, and feel like in retrospect, I was outmatched (certainly at 400NL) skill wise fundamentally, whereas I feel more confident in that sense.

I'm really enjoying watching DC videos now too on my new iPhone4 or iPad, makes me happy that I'm learning out of these videos. I have a review coming up for work, I should probably try to be more conscientious at work - it's pretty hard to put my energy into work AND poker fully, as well as the rest of my life. I guess it helps that I feel like it's going well, I think it could easily cause me to take a few days/weeks off poker if I really felt like I wasn't making progress.

Hmm. Upwards and Forwards hopefully :).

First!

Hi all, my name's JP.

Well let's see.

I live in Sydney, Australia. I started playing poker about 3 years ago with my friends, after watching WPTs on the TV (hey I can do that, this looks fun!).

Played a bunch with friends, and live freerolls - and started playing MTTs after investing some time reading books and in a membership with Cardrunners. After losing my 3x $50 deposits, finally 'got' what I'm supposed to do and built up enough of a bankroll to start playing cash games - 50NL, 100NL - and actually moved upto 400NL with a lot of help from DC videos, which made me think that I was like TEH SHIT.

Unfortunately a period of runbad coupled with my deterioating NL game (playing too many tables for rakeback) got the better of me and going back to full time work (after a foray into a brief Ph.D. study) poker dropped off the radar somewhat.

I'm trying to take it seriously again after a good WCOOP score and a lot of confidence gained at 100NL recently. I'm taking shots at 200NL at the moment, and hopefully I can move up the stakes again...
