Lessons Learned

Lessons Learned

When I first started playing poker online, I knew enough to think I knew enough. I was an intelligent guy with a few poker concepts juggling around in my head. I was certainly better than the droolers, but was a typical regfish. Here is a graph from my early days. In the following paragraphs, I’ll disclose some of what I’ve learned in my years here at DC. It will include some thoughts I’ve written down over the years, in addition to some helpful recommendations, tools, and links. This is another old graph, but one that was generated using the knowledge found here on DC. Variance plays a part in all of our graphs, the good and the bad, but I can say with 100% certainty that during the time I played the 2nd graph’s hands, I was 10 times the player I was when I started. That doesn’t mean once you learn a great deal that you will be impervious to downswings. This is a graph from New Year’s Eve a couple years ago. Clearly we all run bad at times. The trick is to accept it. If you have AA and you beat KK, then you are running good. You just won an entire pot in which you only deserved 80%. Extrapolate this to less cut-n-dry scenarios and you’ll start to see that poker is a long-run game. Try to make the most +EV decisions in all situations and let everything else go. You can’t control the cards, but you can control how you react.

“Life is 10% what happens to you and 90% how you react to it” - Charles R. Swindoll

Hopefully some of my lessons learned will help those of you out there who have yet to learn them. And for those who have already learned them, hopefully this will serve as a refresher course. Just writing all of this has sure helped me remember some of these lessons again.

Top 10 Beginner Focus Areas

1. Hand Selection

2. Position

3. Board Texture

4. Bet Sizing

5. Hand Reading & Ranges

6. Equity

7. Tilt

8. Game Selection

9. Adaptation

10. Leverage

Work on each of these areas one at a time and you’ll find yourself improving at a much quicker rate than had you tried to tackle everything at once. You'll naturally make incremental advances in all areas of poker while you play by virtue of the fact that you will be presented with a myriad of decisions that cover all kinds of topics. When I say work on 1 thing at a time, I don't necessarily mean stop thinking about 3betting when you are working on tilt. Poker will force you to work on everything while you play, but your focus away from the table is the key.

If you're trying to work on opening ranges, then get serious with that topic. Sit down and think about what you know already. Then try to find some hands that gave you pause and post them, asking specifically about opening ranges. Read what people say and continue to ask questions. Try to find some videos that might help with that area. Work until you feel comfortable with that topic and then move on.

The process of improving is cyclical. Say there is this list of 10 things to work on. You may go through each of them 1 at a time and by the time you get to the end you'll want to start over. At that point, you may realize that you know so much more that when you re-visit those topics, you'll start understanding even more. I find that when I go back and watch a video that I watched a long time ago, it's amazing how much more I pick up today. Little things the were way over my head at the time are now clicking. Because I understand W, X, Y, and Z better now, A makes much more sense.

And when you do play, make a conscious effort to focus on that area. Accept that you will have to deal with other things too, but try to perfect that one area as much as possible. And if you continue to have some fog in your head, keep asking questions.

Moving Up

Don’t be afraid of the next higher stakes. If you play 25NL, then you’ve likely already set a mental barrier with regards to 50NL. This barrier exists only in your mind. Sure, the players will be slightly better, but it’s still the same game. You get the same amount of cards and the decisions that made you a winner at level X will make you a winner at level Y. All it takes is getting used to the new level and making minor adjustments. Look at this hand that I played at 200NL. There are bad players at all levels. Remember that poker is still poker when the numbers get bigger. Your confidence will be key. Take it slowly and you’ll realize that you can still win at the next level if you’re winning at your current level.

A tip that helps me get comfortable with higher stakes is to actually play a VERY short session at 2 levels above my current level. When I was trying to move up to 200NL, I played a small amount of hands at 400NL. I pretty much just folded a lot and only played premium hands as I wasn’t there to get my groove on. I just wanted to get used to being at a table with what were HUGE pots to me. Then, I dropped down to 200NL and it didn’t seem so bad :)

Thought Process

Go through this thought process in every hand. Eventually it will become second nature.

When facing a bet or raise:

1) passive or aggressive?

2) value betting or bluffing?

3) value hands worse vs value hands better, count up total bluff hands

When deciding whether or not to bet or raise:

1) am I value betting or bluffing?

2) if value betting, which worse hands call or raise?

3) if bluffing, do I have PE + FE?

Pre and Post Session Routines

I wrote this regimen up for a friend of mine who doesn't really have any AFT (away from the table) study habits. He wants to start focusing on studying more and playing better. Don't we all? Anyway, I designed this regimen which mimics my regimen pretty well and after writing it, I realized many people could benefit from it. So here ya go :)

This is a 3 step regimen that will inevitably help you have a better mindset while playing, focus more on learning/getting better, and just provide better overall habits. I think designing this regimen will help me as well because I don't do these EVERY time like I should.

Step 1 - Design and follow a pre-session routine.

Mine goes something like this:

Make sure I'm not tired.

Finish any tasks that are on my mind (feed dog, take out trash, etc.).

Go to the bathroom.

Get a glass of water.

Close all browsers and any messenger programs (AIM, Skype, ect.).

Review pre-written notes about leaks I'm trying to fix or any helpful mantras, such as THEY ARE BLUFFING LESS THAN YOU THINK THEY ARE.

Open Pandora and PTR.

Open HEM and my poker client.

Take a few deep breaths and clear my mind.

Step 2 - Design a post-session routine.

Mine goes like this:

Review all of the hands I marked during the session.

Decide if I played them well, if I know how to play it better, and if I should discuss it with a friend, my coach, and/or post to DC.

If necessary, post hand(s) to DC with reads and such.

Review the pre-session notes to assess if I improved upon my leaks.

Utilizing DC

Part 1 - DC Videos

Find a series that you want to watch.

Find time to watch 2 episodes each week, and ONLY watch the video, no internet surfing, messaging, etc.

Take notes on the video and think about how you can implement anything useful into your game. Also, if it's a live play/video review, try to pause the video while watching when a spot comes up and think about how you would play the hand, and then listen to what the coach says.

If it's a current series (as in you are watching it as it's released each week), then post questions in the episode thread.

Part 2 - DC Forums

Make a point to respond to 1 hand each day on the forums. It only takes 5 minutes and each difficult hand posted will make you think about poker while not playing. Look at them as daily quizzes. Don't read anything but the OP before responding.*

*If you don't feel like actually responding due to laziness or being uncomfortable that you don't know what the answer is to the hand, then just respond in your head. Read the OP, formulate how you would play the hand and why, and then read the rest of the thread to see what other people posted and why.

3betting from the Blinds

Think about this way. Say the BT is opening a wide range and folding

to a lot of 3bs. You could say that you should be 3b him with a wide

range because the 3b itself will prove to be a profitable move since

you will pick up the blinds and his raise as dead money each time.

Now let's say the BT is calling a lot of 3bs. We should skew our 3bs

to more value hands, depending on how he plays post flop. If he just

calls our 3b, and then folds every flop where he doesn't hit, then we

can still 3b him with a wide range and just cbet and win more money.

If, however, he is calling 3bs and playing back at you post flop, we

should look to weight our range to value hands.

Now let's say the BT is playing a 4b or fold type game. We should look

to 3b him with a very polarized range. We should still 3b our big

hands for value, but we can take the top of our folding range and 3b

that as well as a bluff since he will either fold or 4b, in which case

we have an easy fold. If we were to 3b a hand like JTs, then we are

taking the postflop value of such a hand and turning it into an

unnecessary bluff. If we 3b JTs, that opponent is going to 4b us and

we have to fold or he is just going to fold and it didn't matter what

cards we had.

Deciding what hands to 3b, imo, is all about how your opponent reacts.

Figure out what he/she will do and then exploit that tendency. For

some opponents, you can 3b KJ for value as they will call with worse.

For others, you should flat and use your post-flop skills to play a

good, but not great hand. And for others you could even just fold KJ

There are no "rules" for poker and it is all about adaptation. Figure

out what your opponents want to do, and then don't let them do it. If

they want to raise a bunch just to steal easy pots pre, 3b them and

make them fold. If they want to play tight, wait for hands, and then

value-bet, just fold when they raise. Observe how they play and

counter it.

Poker Buddies

Without a doubt, finding 1+ other people with whom you can discuss poker in depth will be the catalyst for your improvements. They will keep you motivated and keep you thinking. I have a buddy who I would discuss hands with every single day through email. Back and forth while we were at work we'd analyze every spot, every decision. This, more than anything else, helped me grow. There are plenty of people here on DC from which to pick. Find a few people and help each other grow. I latched onto one of the few other intelligent players in my home game and we pushed each other along the way. We questioned each other and forced each other to have a reason for all of our actions. Do that and the sky is the limit.

I'd say my biggest regret is without a doubt not studying properly. I've watched more videos than most, but I was always of the mindset that "I'm a smart guy, I'll absorb the info and then move on." Instead of watching videos properly, reading forums posts properly, and receiving coaching properly, I used the excuse of being intelligent to rationalize laziness. Had I done it differently, I have no doubt my progress would have accelerated a great deal, resulting in a much larger bankroll.

A Few Recommended Videos/Series

The Haj School will teach you how to learn. Watch this before anything else.

DogisHeadsUp Episode 1 - Build your poker ship right. Watch this before the rest.

Math of NLHE is another must watch. I don’t care if you hate math or think it’s boring. If you want to improve, then man up and watch.

From the Ground Up is a great beginner series.

Real Life: Micro NL Grinder is another great series that helped me improve tremendously.

The Coaching Tree - Probably my favorite series of them all and the one from which I learned the most. Baluga is the nuts. Be sure to check out his other stuff, including Coaching Kristy.

The entire Blueprint series. They are short enough and can be listened to in audio only so just listen to them. Everyone has their favorites and a few of mine are sthief’s, Entity’s, and Ansky’s.

The Eightfold Path to Poker Enlightenment - Most like it and some don’t. Play the odds and watch it. As an aside, it’s probably the best produced series in the entire library.

Tolerance will give you a new perspective on variance.

Where the Buffalo Roam is range-based analysis from two of the best, Wilt & jk3a.

Moneytrain to Midstakesville is a great series if you’re stuck at small stakes.

The Thin Red Line showcases Grindcore at his finest. Episode 1 in particular is one of my all time favorites.

Poker Tools and Awesome Threads

DC Community Concepts

Variance Simulator

Poker Session Timer - Every 25 minutes check yo' self before you wreck yo' self. In other words, make sure you are not on ANY tilt, you're playing your A game, and you are still at good tables. If necessary, then take a short 5 minute break and clear your mind. There will always be more fish. Taking a small break will do more for your winrate than clinging on and playing when you shouldn't. If a small break didn't work, then take a longer one or just quit for the day.

Thanks for taking the time to write this out, there's a lot of good info in here. I started off the same as you and kind of just thought I could absorb a lot of the info by just lazily watching videos. Lately, I've put more focused effort into it, and I think it has helped me a lot. I also think posting in the threads is one of the most important things (if not most) to improve as a poker player. Writing out your thought process and getting in discussions with other players forces you think a lot about poker, and I feel like this has helped me more than anything else over the last several months.

zachd2323 posted on March 13, 2012 at 00:21 AM

Also lol about playing 2 stakes higher to get comfortable. I was actually just watching the video the other day, where you were talking about it to Sthief. Interesting idea, but maybe not the greatest plan....maybe I'll try it out, we'll see.

Ya know, somehow I left out the MOST important part of my poker development. And that goes along w/ exactly what you said zach. TecmoSuperBowl posted on March 13, 2012 at 02:20 AM

And regarding the move up 2 levels thing, I want to stress that you only play like 30 hands. And there's a very good chance that you fold every one. You're not looking to "play" 2 levels up, you're just looking to experience it.

zachd2323 posted on March 13, 2012 at 04:50 AM

Yeah it certainly makes some sense to play higher to get comfortable with the money. I was just giving you shit about it. There's always an adjustment period with getting comfortable with losing stacks, though, so I'm not sure if playing really tightly a limit higher will get you "used to it" or not.

Armisan posted on March 14, 2012 at 03:30 AM

Very helpful read. It`s so true about moving up just to fell the pressure of bigger pots and stakes, it helps a ton with your confidence when you move back down after playing with "big boys" :D

'Fear' is just a process     My ear blowing through the biting wind, the heart could not help but rise a feeling: that is afraid. Dark night, Cheap Nike Shoes a long field on the road I ride alone crazy walk on the way home, my heart again and again to tell myself not afraid! But when I passed a cemetery, my heart could not help speed up the speed of jumping, eyes from time to time to look at the cemetery to see two eyes, my mind suddenly emerge all the ghost stories I have seen. I am afraid of 'ghosts possessed', my heart and told myself that is just a superstition. But I could not help but speed up the speed of cycling, really want to immediately home! But the road or need to step by step, and now feel this road is so long, as if Nike Womens Heels Shoes not the end of the road. My surface is calm, but the heart is afraid! Finally saw the dawn of victory, my heart relaxed a little. When the light reaches the place, the heart is full of joy. In fact, there are a lot of life we did not dare to try the first time, but you do not try, you can not get the kind of heart from the heart of joy, you can never win another of their own. Some people may say: I failed, how to do? I am afraid of failure, so I do not challenge Authentic Men's Nike Shoes I can not do things. If you think so wrong, the world is not only a successful life, there is no only a lifetime of failure. People always have setbacks in life, you face you did not do things, you retreat, that you are very weak! If you choose to challenge, to overcome, even if you fail, you will feel confident. Because you did it, failed to sum up experience from scratch! As the lyrics said, 'do not experience the wind and rain, how can we see the rainbow, no one can casually succeed.' In my opinion is afraid of just an excuse in life, overcome the fear of just need a process, the length of the process is the need for your own definition. There are many celebrities in ancient and modern, they are not born is a successful person. Their success is the need to step by step down to earth, they are afraid, but also failed. But they are afraid of the front and did not retreat, but to overcome! People see is always their brilliant life, people will never see the brilliant life behind. We can put in the first time in the fear, as another life in their own. You can not let the cowardly oneself live in the world at the same time, so that you will provoke ridicule Official Nike Womens Shoes and irony, so you are going to destroy that cowardly oneself. This process is a step towards your success. All in all, fear is just a process, the length of the process just need you slowly to consider their own. The process may be full of excitement, failure, etc., but I hope that every friend must go to challenge the process, always remember 'do not experience the rain and rain can see the rainbow.''Bird's Nest' chief electrician   In March 2009, a film called 'Rainstorms' was shot in the 'Bird's Nest' boot film, the film is the 'Bird's Nest' contact builders - Tan Shuangjian's struggle for the prototype. Nice post. I learn something more challenging on distinct blogs everyday. It will always be stimulating to read content off their writers and practice a little something from their store. I’d choose to use some with all the content in my small weblog whether you do not mind. Natually I’ll provide a link on your own internet weblog. Many thanks sharing.
