Not a good way to start the month

I was looking to try and get 300VPPs worth of play in today (about 3 hours) but I’m afraid I’m done for the day today as any further play I would do would be on tilt.

Just had one of those days where I’ve flopped massive draw after massive draw and missed and my opponents have hit miracle after miracle after miracle to manage to screw me out of pots. (like literally I’m something like 2 for 12 on 14+ out draws and that gets expensive)

Afraid it was an “everything goes wrong” day. You catch the guy bluffing the flop with A-high, he turns/rivers some BS pair, any card which gives you 2 pair or a SD-able hand makes your opponent’s retard-end gutshot straight, or my favourite one where the guy turns AQo into a bluff on the river and you call down with AJ (the guy was 75VPIP no it wasn’t a VB). Definitely an irritating day and tbh not what I needed at this point so I certainly won’t be playing any further today.

Finished with SD figures of 30/48 bascially saying, if you had a draw you missed, if you flopped anything SD-able the board came nightmareish and btw FU on the river :)

So today’s sadly ended early:

Hands: 514
VPPs: 232
Results: ($213.00)

Ah well, always tomorrow.

FWIW I’m waiting for the members section to upgrade it’s certificate so Firefox doesn’t bark at me and I’ll upload Part 1 of the Sweat Vid. some interesting spots, certainly a couple where I play bad…I’m certainly not making things easy for myself here.

I think 3/6 may have to wait until I get myself sorted out.

I haven't blogged about this yet.... I shall

Second part of my vid with BBB

Slight downside being the first half was published over 3 months ago.

That got some pretty good reviews, although I’m blaming BBB for that, and fwiw I think that Part 2 is far better. I get into a lot of “uh-oh” type situations and BBB’s on top form so if you’ve got a spare hour or so to have a look at my play before I decided whole digits were the way to go in the stakes I play I’d appreciate any feedback

September Goals

I’m back on the grind train this month, assuming I can get my PC to work inthe other room while I destroy and rebuild the room it’s currently in.

(Btw there will be pics of destruction and rebuilding once the works done…stay tuned)

Poker Goals:

1) 7500 VPPS

This is due to the fact that Pokerstars this month has cash credits up for grabs again and I intended to get the first 3 layers ($8, $40 and $200). This will also get me Plantium Star which means I can start chaining £250 Amazon Vouchers or Bonuses, which ever I feel like….but it will mean hitting goal 2.

2) Start playing 3/6

I am currently bankrolled for 3/6, or at least a pretty hefty shot at it, and with almost $600 of bonuses on Stars pending and a potential $600 Full Tilt bonus waiting in the wings playing 3/6 at the moment shouldn’t be too much of a risk

HOWEVER, I am going to make sure I get 10k hands of 2/4 in first (which will mean about 2500 to start off this month) so that the swings don’t instantly send me loopy

3) Work on Mental Game

See Part 2. I had a very disappointing session in July and it ripped me apart and I’m not going to let that happen again. I’m much more comfortable now at these stakes (The one downside of multiplying your stakes by 4 in 2 months) and can now see playing higher.

4) Attend at least 50% of sweat sessions

This is a slightly lower but still very important priority for me. I enjoyed the first sweat session I did and I’m happy to provide feedback for others too.

Real Life Goals

Best Room EVAR to be constructed….well pretty good for a Small Stakes Minbettor anyway :)

Well I don’t know about lazy but it’s been a pretty trying time the last 2 months or so irl and I haven’t had time to put the volum ein I’d managed before which, to me is pretty disappointing.

I mean I’ve maintained a 3.5BB/100 winrate over the past 25k hands, you’d think I’d be raring to go at the tables but something seems to jump out in front of me and stop me getting in serious grind atm.

Sad fact is this week we will be decorating and re-flooring my “Entertainment” Room upstairs which badly needs an overhaul as it’s feeling old and cluttered so certain items will be bought into the room to bring it up to date, such as new sofa, new floor, better lighting, XBox 360, Projector moved and Screen put up etc, but this obviously means moving the desktop and since my laptop is most certainly from the 20th century playing poker on it is kind of like driving a car into a lake.

Still my goal for next month is 5000VPP to maintain my charge for Supernova. Obviously it’s gotten a bit harder recently but since I’m on the verge of 3/6 if I can just get 2 months in at 3/6 then I’ll make it easily, I can more than likely do it at 2/4 anyway.

21000VPP to go

Well catch ya laters

August 20, 2009

I'm rich beyond my wildest dreams!!!

Of course then unfortunately Stars has to go and piss all over my bonfire

Not saying I played remarkably but I think out of all the showdowns I saw I’d count 1, maybe 2 as dodgy.

The rest were classics like the below:

Poker Stars $2/$4 Limit Hold’em – 4 players
The Official Hand History Converter

Pre Flop: (1.5 SB) Hero is SB with T Heart J Heart
CO calls, 1 fold, Hero raises, 1 fold, CO calls

Flop: (5 SB) 8 Heart 9 Spade 2 Spade (2 players)
Hero bets, CO calls

Turn: (3.5 BB) J Club (2 players)
Hero bets, CO raises, Hero calls

River: (7.5 BB) A Club (2 players)
Hero checks, CO bets, Hero calls

Final Pot: 9.5 BB
CO shows A Heart K Spade (a pair of Aces)
Hero mucks T Heart J Heart
CO wins 9.25 BB
(Rake: $1.00)

I suppose 3 betting the turn is an option there OOP but tbh I wasn’t really expecting my opponent to be dumb enough to limp call AK preflop and then turn it into a bluff when he has no fold equity. Don’t see why I should have expected any different though, there are some VERY special people playing 2/4 on Stars at the moment

Premiership is BACK!!

Man Utd vs Chelsea in the Charity Sheild…should be a fun little scrap and it’ll be interesting to see how Utd come out of the block having lost Ronaldo over the summer

PLus it’ll give me a chance to finalise my Fantasy Football team as ’m not sure of a couple of selections :)

Oh yeah, and I’ll prolly play some poker…maybe.

July 08, 2009

Just a quick blog post to plonk and idea out there I’ve been thinking about for a little while now and that’s the idea of how nostalgia interfere’s with current perceptions.

Anyone who’s known me for any length of time can hear me spouting on and on about certain PC games from the 1990’s like X-Com Enemy Unknown and Freespace

These games are constantly held up in lines of “Best games EVAR!!” and there is some good reason behind it. For their time they were advanced, and immersive and had pretty epic storylines (especailly Freespace). However the reason they’ve lasted and people, including me, get teary eyed about them is very simple and it’s not because the potential for making a good game has gone.

It’s becasue both genre’s pretty much died about 2 years after the initial release so they’re the best we’re ever going to get!! Point and Click turn based Strategy in X-Com’s case and Space Flight Sim in Freespace’s case.

In fact anyone who started gaming after, say, when the XBox first came out (No not the 360 the original thingummy) will probably never have heard of these games and won’t want to either becasue compared to current day offerings the graphics are clunky, the games are bugged and the story’s feel a little cliche and they lack the realism which can be found in modern games like Call of Duty where if you get shot you’re pretty much dead, rather that being able to ram another fighter in outer space head on and survive with a small dent, or in X-Com’s case defy the laws of gravity by shooting out the entire bottom level of a building to see it still hovering there thanks to a distinct lack of physics engine.

So where am I going with this?

The exact same thing applies to poker in my opinion.

Everyday we see new threads on 2+2 and the like.

“The games aren’t beatable” people cry. “European sites are so much better” and various other ill-informed crap is spewed on a daily basis and I’m quite sure that those posting these message believe them.

“The good times are over” is another favourite.

They blame the training sites, they blame the UIGEA, they blame 2+2, they blame Pokerstars/Full Tilt etc.

Anyone but themselves…

Now I started taking poker semi-seriously around about Nov 2007, which was when I took my first ill-fated lunge at 1/2 and started thinking about things like rakeback and, incidentally also joined DC….although I may have joined a little earlier than that becasue I still remember the RtR when it was a series and being really excited re 3-bet merger.

So what does this mean?

It means I never experienced those days. I never knew what it was like to open up 4 tables of 10/20 on Party Poker in 2003 and have your printer just spew money at you. Am I bitter about that? No.

Sure I could have found poker while at university but I would have been ill equipped to handle it and I’d have been making just as many mistakes as the fish were.

This means I have no starry-eyed look back on a 5/T Game on Party which played like a 0.25/0.5 game now. All I can do is try to improve and beat what is in front of me.

Like in real life, as little as 10-15 years ago you could probably get away with having little to no computer skills, now they’re a must of modern day life and thus it has developed with poker.

Before you could play incredibly sub-optimal poker and get away with it. Now, even at Small Stakes, you can’t. This doesn’t mean the games are unbeatable, it means you have to improve and develop. Just because information is out there doesn’t mean people use it. Just because DC is available doesn’t mean everyone buys a subscription.

Have the games got worse? Of course they have and it would be foolish to think otherwise, but those who get ahead in life and poker keep their skills at a level where they are ahead of the chasing pack and that is the goal from now.

Easy money may be gone, but every loophole is closed in the end. Those who work, learn , apply and look forward, will get the reward. Those who dwell in and lament a lost past will be doomed to never develop beyond it.
