very nice season final!
btw: you do realize, that your HUD windows is just covered by Vanessa's?
Gman returns for the final installment of his series GMandatory. In this episode he faces off against Vanessa Selbst and they play a gritty HU match on two tables.
Gman’s debut heads up NL series. In each episode Garret will play a DC Executive Producer heads up. The catch? The EP must play according to certain restrictions designed to mimic player types. Featuring in-depth discussion on developing optimal counter-strategies vs obvious leaks, as well as high-level psychology and leveling. Can the EPs escape their straitjackets, or will Gman dominate?

in your closing thoughts you talked about evaluating lines in general and how part of your game developed by taking the stuff that had merit from fishy lines you observed, and then mentioned how that worked out well this session.
do you think you played overly fishy this session or do you think you just adjusted well or in some cases standard(ly) e.g. the K
7
river call?

I could see why you might think that was what I was trying to say in the video. In reality, I was for the most part extremely comfortable w/ the way I played this match with an exception or two that I mention in the video.
All I was saying was that it's important to always keep an open mind when you are playing HU. If you decide that limping the button sucks, fine, but you should have a logical reason better than "we'll only fish limp the button". It reminds of 3-4 years ago when everyone including myself only played six max and it was common knowledge that anyone who minraised PF was a fish, and as such practically none of the good players ever minraised, they always made it 3-4X. What the solid regulars failed to realize was that it wasn't their minraising that transformed these weak players into ATMs, it was more often their ridiculous postflop mistakes. It's important to realize that even really terrible players will take good/interesting lines from time to time. And to a) maximize your profits against them and b) occasionally take stuff from them and add it to your arsenal as a poker player, you need to notice and acknowledge their play.
That concept is relevant to this match in that I did all kinds of stuff that you actually would see weak players do aka limp a lot, minraise, play relatively straightforward, and obviously call down like crazy too. Are those strategies going to be suboptimal against the majority of your opponents? Absolutely, but I thought using the strategies would be best against Vanessa in this match.
oh i thought you adjusted well actually. i'm just saying your lines were pretty self-justifying in themselves and I didn't think you had to defend them more than you already had. or if you felt like people would think they looked fishy... anyways /nitpicking
Awesome last episode gman. I feel like you got a little too much hate for this series (maybe I'm wrong, but at least it seemed that way in some of the earlier video threads), I think you did a really good job though and obviously your commentary was really insightful.
@17:00 minutes
im 1/2 HU player and little bit 2/4, my thoughts:
"she is not repping much and she knows that, thus she has it here. obv you two were 1 level ahead of that both". My point i really like to make is that it literally never happens at 2/4 that someone makes this bluff, so i totally get your thought process, but 400nl players please never call here coz they will have it always ![]()
35:30 KT 648ss flop
What is your plan if she cbets?

"The stats are a little bit weird, like 90% red and a little bit black" LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOL
45:00 JJ
I dont see a point in NOT 3betting here, she 4bets and plays back a lot and JJ isnt really the hand you wanna flat w, other than AA and KK
57:00 K7s
What is her point in betting . making this play? She wants to get us of a hand or something?

Your account is currently a basic account. Looking briefly at your account history it looks like you did the 7 day free trial and after that the payment attempt on your credit card failed 3 consecutive times for whatever reason and you were downgraded and never charged.

Gman thanks very much indeed for the series.

Well thanks a lot. I mean Dog Is Heads Up was just such a hit that it was pretty hard to follow it up. Just like w/ poker, I think there's a pretty clear learning curve when it comes to producing videos. So hopefully I have made some strides in that department and in future videos/series the focus will be on the content and less on the logistical aspects because I will have improved in those areas.

Completely agree. This is why I offered a disclaimer here and in a few other situations throughout this series where I say "Well I'm gonna call here for XYZ reasons, but you should usually fold for ABC." This is why playing really great HU players is a mixed blessing for those of you who play lower stakes as the information can conflict at times.

Plenty of options here. In general c/r this flop is really standard. We take down the pot w/ K high a good amount, have a bunch of equity when called, and can win a pretty big pot when we hit any of our 15 outs.
If I was playing a pretty good hand reader who also played fairly solid and didn't double barrel turns too often, c/c this flop has a lot of merit too. When we hit a flush, K, or T, our hand is pretty disguised. And because our opponent will give up on the turn a good amount, we can bet the river expecting a fold quite frequently as he will assume we were extremely likely to c/r the flop w/ a FD.
Against Vanessa specifically in this match, I prefer taking control of the hand and c/r. She will fire the turn quite a lot when we whiff and it puts us in a position where we probably should just c/f on the turn. We also have a lot of flexibility when we hit a hand on the turn against her because she will consider repping our made hand or making a thin value bet on spades/T/K on the turn.
Against most reasonable opponents, I would c/r this flop and lead any turn, whether it helped us or not a good amount of the time without any specific information that would dictate another line being better.

Pretty much agree completely. JJ is a hand that I virtually always 3 bet against everyone. With that being said, I remember thinking that on favorable flops like T75 or something, I thought she was likely to not give a flop c/r all that much respect. Certainly 3 betting here is fine if not best. I just try to make a habit of keeping a variety of hands in my range in a bunch of situations both PF and on later streets when playing against superior hand readers. Although in a given hand it may not be the highest EV play, it makes you much more dangerous to play against
57:00 K7s

By the river she correctly assumes that the vast majority of our range here is only semistrong made hands 44-AA, 7x, and air. As such, she decided that the best line would be to c/r here obviously expecting me to fold a large % of my value range on this river.

I'll add in with everyone else that this was a great series and I really enjoyed the discussion. Was awesome getting to see you duke it out with these great poker minds and seeing them adjust to the restrictions and you readjust and on and on...
Super sick stuff all around!
Also looking forward to the next series/Ghost video, maybe we could see a teaming up with Baluga Whale for a Coaching Tree-esque HU endeavor!
