Wow, pretty sweet introduction vandweller, can't wait for the rest of the series. Found it to be very inspiring and I just wanna load up a bunch of tables and grind like a gremlin all day. Really gave me an insight into the mentality it takes to be a grinder, so thank you for that sir, godspeed and good luck to veloblank on his glorious quest.
great video guys. link to the tommy angelo podcast you were talking about?
Really awesome video. Can't wait to watch episode 2.

I live in an apartment by myself. LOL
I don't even play SNGs but I'm gonna watch this series. Hilarious so far
I live in an apartment by myself. LOL
It took everything in me to not go into a hysterical laughing fit.
I live in an apartment by myself.
Classic! hahaha
It took everything in me to not go into a hysterical laughing fit.
If you guys do a follow up to this series it should be called "I live in an apartment by myself."
That was awesome.
Great start to the series, guys.
Only had time to skim through the video, but definitely seems like there is a lot of good advice here that goes beyond the SNG player. Anyone who posts a "Should I go pro?" or "ZOMG I'm a PRO!!" thread should be directed here imo.
What's the time stamp for the "I live in an apartment by myself" action?

Oh that is awesome. I do that all the time, answering a different question than what was intended. I think this can be a great conversational tool when used properly. For example:
-What time is it?
-My 7 figure salary. Oh, I misunderstood you, four thirty.
-Where's the nearest gas station?
-My 12 inch penis. Oh, I misunderstood you, go to the next traffic light, make a right and it's on your left.
Oh, and I live in an apartment by myself too.
I just gained an appreciation for the awesomeness of my situation when I randomly watched the pilot episode of Perfect Strangers on youtube.
Top job guys. I liked the first episode and found it informative.
Vandweller, could you please recommend a goal setting book to me?
Excellent video!!! Highly motivating. Now all I'm wondering is how much $$ will it cost me to get this type of training? Any package deals for such type of training? Seriously this series looks like it's shaping up, or at least has the potential, to be the mother of all SNG series for ANY site.
Now all I'm wondering is how much $$ will it cost me to get this type of training?
Im liking this to i play a bit of these for fun. Looks like its going to be a great series. I have a free little tourney manager its on an ex hard drive that my little brother has but will post it for you guys. You just enter the buy in some notes and place. Looking forward to the rest of this!
edit: A HM tooltime part would go well with this i cant figure how to read the sng part of it, alls I see is the hands. Maybe its manual entry like the old PT but just a quick run through it and what you think the best stats are would be great!

Great intro Van and Velo. The goal setting and professionalism segments are worth repeated viewings. I'm going to enjoy "playing along at home."

Great video and I think alot of the topics in this apply to all forms of poker and not just SnGs.
I really loved this video.
You covered a whole lot of the stuff im am actually struggling with.
I recently went through a pretty sick 50 Buyin Downswing and now i have problems with getting back into the right mood for grinding it out.
Not feeling very confident about my understanding of the game, being scared of making it an 80 Buyin Downswing or something like that, not enjoying to play at all atm,
that are all factors that keep me away from putting in the volume i "should".
But i feel this Video could have a big impact on my mindset and help to get me back on track.
Thank you Vandweller <3 <3 <3
Btw, i definetly will try your cashout-rule, sounds like a great way of thinking about it to me.
Velo, i wish you a lot of fun and good luck at the tables. This series is gonna be a really great opportunity for you, i am a bit jealous ![]()
I am sorry for my bad english, i hope you nonetheless could understand what i wanted to say.
You really put a lot of work into your videos, vandweller.
As much as I appreciate your powerpoints I honestly wonder if we will ever see a live play video from you ![]()
I'm looking forward to the rest of the series and I'm rooting for veloblank ![]()

SNG Tracker. Zomg i think that's something i coded about 3 years ago. Surely the HH importing doesn't work any more?
edit: oh no it's not actually plz ignore me
p.s. vandipants - you're pretty good at this imo
All right, bulk response time.

Thanks. I was actually sweating this one a bit, wondering how pissed you'd all be that you finally get another SNG vid and there's no actual gameplay or hand analysis. Glad you guys are getting something out of it.
I live in an apartment by myself. LOL
The definitive and official quote is "I live by myself in an apartment." So funny. T-shirts coming soon.
If you guys do a follow up to this series it should be called "I live in an apartment by myself."
I think that is reason in itself to do a follow up series. Is there any way we can quick change the name of this current series? :-)

Top job guys. I liked the first episode and found it informative.
Vandweller, could you please recommend a goal setting book to me?
Thanks. Yeah sure. I'll use this space to recommend some other self-helpful kind of books too.
The one I had in mind is about goal-setting and time-management. It's a classic:
Alan Lakein - How to Get Control of Your Time And Your Life
Some other self-helpful books (off the top of my head, I'm sure there are others I'm forgetting)
D. Greenberger and C. Padretsky - Mind Over Mood
David Burns - Feeling Good
David Burns - The Feeling Good Handbook
Edwin Locke - Goal-Setting: A Motivational Technique That Works! (out of print)
Edwin Locke - Study Methods and Motivation: A Guide to Effective Study
J. Burka, L. Yuen - Procrastination: Why You Do It, What To Do About It
If anyone knows of a resource with tips on eliminating discourse markers, I would highly appreciate it. And so would you. :-)
Excellent video!!! Highly motivating.
Thanks. I do what I can.

You can contact DC coaching and ask for my rates and packages.
Seriously this series looks like it's shaping up, or at least has the potential, to be the mother of all SNG series for ANY site.
Coming from you, knowing that you have been a member of every single training site, that means something. However much I appreciate the enthusiasm though, I wouldn't quite go as far as you. As long as I can get through all 8 eps, get veloblank up to snuff, and provide a little entertainment and information for the rest of you, I'll be satisfied.
I really loved this video.

I have been there, believe me. And though I've largely overcome it, it's still something I struggle with to a small extent.
As much as I appreciate your powerpoints I honestly wonder if we will ever see a live play video from you
Live play vids are a little overrated in my opinion. But that just could be because I don't learn best from them, and I don't particularly enjoy making them as much as blackboard and replayer vids. That being said, I understand that they can help students model their play after the instructor and I see the value in that. The live play vids are coming, maybe even a couple in the weeks in between RLMSG episodes. Stay tuned.
vandipants
I sincerely wish I could change my name here on DC to this.
I don't even overrate them, I see them as entertainment which is one of my main reasons to join such a site.
Obviously when it comes to any form of poker you can't just do the same things your coach does and profit. You have to understand the reasoning behind it and apply it in your particular situations.
But there is a lot to take out of a live video that can't be covered as a general in powerpoint presentations such as reads on the table and adapting to the changing gameflow.
Hey DCers.
Thanks for all the comments about the first video. I'm looking forward to the next sessions and to finally break down what I call my game and start winning some SnG's consistently. I play on FT under echecboy.
peace,
velo
I'll authorize the sale of "I live by myself in an apartment." Heck, I'll buy a shirt.

i love these powerpoints that dc does but is there anyway we can get our hands on these? i think itd be pretty useful for some of us to be able to follow along or read through these in the futre. thanks
Awesome video. I don't play SNGs, but I thought there was just a lot of good general poker stuff in here to think about.

+1. Would be great if you could put the slides up for download.
Great vid that again showed me the basic stuff not even related to poker, I'm doing wrong all the time. In most parts that's things to help you improve in life.
Ideas for series:
2) Episode on SS STTs that introduces ICM and late game/final table concepts
3) HH Episode on Turbo HU SnGs; the main point here is to discuss how to EXPLOIT other players at <20BB. You could settle for playing a SAGE/Nash game and expect a 50/50ish 1st/2nd distribution, but if you are HU against a fish you should expect to win a great deal more and these games will give you a ton of HH to demonstrate this. Introduce the math that explains why we don't flat with KQs when <20BB deep OOP etc.
4) Introduce playing 45man tournaments as a great way to build a BR from a few hundred to >$1k. Introduces the tight/early strategy but also entering limped pots with small PP and suited aces when the time is right.
5) Further episode on 45man tournies that deal with non-STT bubble situations when stacks are all typically <30BB. Shoving ATC from the CO over smaller stacks with antes; calling other regs light to defend your blinds; failure of ICM to value being the CL at your table due to all the +EV situations it will put you in.
6) Move on to 180mans, and adjustments for deeper stacked tournies where bubble can have two or three people at your tabe >50BB deep. Final tables where it isn't just shove fold (3-betting, 4-betting, playing post-flop when flat called from the blinds).
7) Several 5-minute segments on using software to improve ability to put in volume. Multi-tabling (tiling, stacking, auto-hotkeys), HEM for quick range reads, maybe a section on analysing regs who you play often and making notes. Could include SngWiz/importance of being able to estimate appropiate strategy for custom tournament structures (i.e. first place or bust in 180mans vs. survival as a mid-stack when 4-handed in a STT).
8) Other tournaments styles, rebuys, ante-up, knockout, larger field touraments, DON, steps sngs, etc.
PM if you want to discuss these things more ![]()
Awesome vid. Like/d it very much. Finally a SNG Serie "from the Ground up".
I was so motivated that I have learning some hours with the ICM calculator and start playing only 4 tables and damn positive results. Can you turn a SNG Forum into life here on deucescracked? And what is the easiest way to convert HEM hands to this forum? So far so good
I play almost entirely cash games, but I found this to be very helpful. I like the way you talk about variance and grinding, a very good perspective.
Awesome! Can't wait to check this out!
Great video. I didn't feel like playing poker today after some beats yesterday and thought I would just watch some videos. After watching this it got me motivated to just suck it up and put some hours playing.
I especially like your advice on asking yourself WHY it is that you don't feel like playing. I do this all the time and I realized today it was not because of any valid reason but instead I was letting false feelings get me unmotivated to play.
Great stuff and can't wait for the rest of the series.
Great opening to the series. I feel like this expresses some vague thoughts I've had about professionalism, etc. E.g. check out some of my weekly plans: this week and last week.
I especially liked to use the phrase "professional development." This sort of comes from my time working in tech stuff, where good programmers (at least) want to spend a significant amount of time in training/staying up to date/reading Usenet/reading Slashdot/etc.
In poker it's easy to just worry about getting in volume and neglect the learning. Ultimately that leads to the sort of stagnant, brainless career that IMO isn't much better than cubicle-land. I think vandweller covered these topics of professional growth really well in this vid.
Can't wait to see the rest of the series!

What parts of those concepts need further treatment beyond that in Last Man Standing?
Probably not much tbh. It wouldn't hurt to recap as I find re-watching the LMS vids painfully slow (altho I don't think I learn anything from them now, which is probably why).
Well, hearing different teachers present the same concept can be helpful. But vandweller talks a lot about ICM in his two Blackboard vids too.
Mostly I just wondered if there were tons of advanced ICM concepts I hadn't yet been exposed to. ![]()
Vandipants = one of the best DC pickups ever

FWIW although "White Wedding" was certainly awesome, I think my favorite one of the literal videos was Tears for Fears' "Head over Heels". But I had forgotten that it was such a dumbarsed, maudlin video in the first place. Ah, 80s.

That's my gf's favorite too. For me, it's a toss-up btw
"White Wedding" and "Take On Me".
...impatiently waiting for the next segment.
I'm keeping busy watching the "Last Man Standing" series. I need to go back and rate those. They were great.
Watched the video and love it!! Very nice job ! Oh and ...
"I live in an apartment by myself" lmao !
really sound advice, 5 stars! mental form and resourse management should also be applied when you play cash.
Listen to your own bankroll advice and be willing to move down or up as th situation requires, remember, a high roi is attainable, with a little work. Dont be scared to lose sometimse, thats what it takes to win.
I'd be interested in knowing if you gave Velo any "homework" after the video. What kind of things are going on behind the scenes? If either Van or Velo would care to comment.
Also have you decieded on any goals Velo? How have you been sticking with them?

yeah, velo should start a blog or something...
Thanks for the series. I enjoyed it very much and learned a lot ! I hope the stt and mtt segment of DC will evolve like the cashgame segments! Awsome !
Vandweller, you're my new hero! I loved you're blackboard series and now this. You have good sense of humor and excellent teaching skills. Deucescracked has a nose for talent obv! Keep em coming homes.
I did start a blog but have no posts yet, but I just posted a thread. I would be happy to keep up the blog if that interests more people in to the behind the scenes things I've been doing and some more about my poker besides the series.
ROI is not your ultimate performance metric. Your hourly$ is.
Great video, some very interesting concepts.. Just what I needed to hear in regards to starting the micro stakes grind
Hey I have a question for you vandweller ; is that powerpoint you are using for this episode? I don't understand how you got it setup on that 1 slide where it shows like the table of contents on the left panel .
Hey guys! Thanks for a interesting introduction of this series.
I hope its gonna help me improve my game 2. Keep up the good work!
Regards / Johan

I did it all manually. I'm sure there is a simpler way to accomplish the same task, but I don't know how.

Thanks, welcome, and good luck.
A question for van. What does it takes to get a coach like you? I mean, I live in Sweden so it's kinda impossible to meet irl
Is there any other way?
Best Regards / Johan
Van, just listened in on this - it was great, and good for all poker, not just SNG, thanks
Great Video. I'm new here, and looking forward to watching the rest of this series. Thanks.
From the entire 120 min video there is only 20 min of useful information and the rest is just a verbal diarrhea....Just amazing how much you like to talk...
Stick to the point, talk less... this video is exhausting to watch...

Sorry you didn't get anything out of it. Yeah I do talk a lot. Some people like it, some people don't. I'd advise you not to watch the rest of series if you are in the latter camp.
I hope you give Van another chance cause I think he does a great job. If you really want to learn anything you should watch the rest of this and his Blackboard series.

If he thinks this one is verbal diarrhea, his head will explode with those Blackboard vids.
Just want to say that this is my second series since signing up a few days ago and this video was awesome! It really hit home for me - telling me something I already "knew" but that I really needed to hear. And not only for poker. Thanks. I am really looking forward to watching part two tomorrow.
btw, I knew what you meant here by humility and I still think it is a perfect term. It is a great word and quality when not misunderstood to mean being a doormat. Classically, the term has meant practically the opposite: more like someone who is very confident and strong while also knowing there is more knowledge, a higher power, or plenty left to learn; someone who is comfortable possibly knowing or being less than those around them; someone who does not define themselves solely by what they know or how confident they are. Etc. Humility is a wonderful thing.
yes i can not find the tommy anglelo thread what the two guy wwas talking about any clues??? thanks
yes i can not find the tommy anglelo thread what the two guy wwas talking about any clues??? thanks
I can't remember this exactly, but perhaps he meant Tommy Angelo's great serie Eightfold path to Enlightment. A single best series I have seen.
Your journey to enlightment begins here: http://www.deucescracked.com/videos/890-Episode-One
I really enjoyed the video especially the section on cashing out. Also I can definitely see how staying humble or teachable is important. I think that a huge ego can give an ever-growing leak to anyone's game.

The cashing out section is also something I really liked about this first episode as well. There a few sound cashout strategies out there imo. This system allows you to get paid every week/month regardless of performance and allows your BR to grow.
Hi veloblank! I just started watching the micro sitngo grinder series and I heard you were from Indiana. Are you still around? I'm from Punxsy and I'm starting to learn sitngos.
Yup still here. The Eternal Student.
Awesome man. If you ever want to play or know of any local tournaments shoot me a PM! I need some people to talk poker with! ![]()
Has your game improved a lot since you finished the series? Are you goals being realized? (didn't mean to sound so cheezy...) ![]()
My game has definitely improved since I've finished the series. Through the series I didn't work that much with SNG Wizard as I should have.
In October and November of last year (I think it was) I became really disheartened with my game. I couldn't beat the turboes (3.40s and 6.50s) technically and psychologically. Basically, I would run bad in a few games and then subsequently play bad. I wasn't used to being low on chips and taking a stand at all in a tournament. I wasn't using logic in assigning ranges to villains so I found myself low on chips and fold equity. This was of course directly related to not working with SNG Wizard enough.
At the end of November and into December I started studying more about the game and putting in more volume on Cereus. Until the end of December I was grinding micro $2 turboes on UB and making a few hundred dollars, which I had to immediately withdraw. In January I started back on Stars, playing primarily $3 regulars and beating them for a decent rate. I came across a post from Bones about the problems of moving up being 50% technical and 50% psychological. I realized that being staked/coached, to some degree, would take care of both problems for me.
So from the end of January until the beginning of April I was on a stake at UB where I played the 5.50 and 6.60s and started playing the $11 games.
Now I play on Stars again at the 3.40 turboes; trying to get more volume in and breaking out of the 10 man game, while learning more about my game which still has leaks for sure. I've experienced a lot of pretty breakeven play, then a pretty large upswing and then a downswing just this week. It's directly related to my game right now, which I think is a little weak/tight at critical spots. I don't think I'm picking up on the risk aversion the players should have when I shove.
But I'm putting in the work and getting help. I like the study part of the game now, both in HEM and SNG Wiz. My goal for June will be a lot more work with the ICM from Scratch and SNG Wiz to learn the scenarios and to accurately understand the equity in the game at 3-6 handed play.
hey vandweller, first of all i'd like to say great job to your videos, i basically bought deuces cracked solely for your videos. I was wondering what your views are on 9STT turbos vs 9STT regulars. Also in this video you mentioned that you coach a lot of students, how is you as a teacher attainable?
I can't speak for van, but I played the regulars for a lot of the series, got owned by the turboes for awhile before working a lot with SNG Wiz to really know my full range at any given time, rather than the top of my range, which you can pretty much wait for in the regulars.
Now I cringe at playing regular speeds, they are softer I feel, and the increased ROI might make up for the reduced volume, but learning the push/fold situations will probably eventually lead you to the turboes where you can play more of them per hour.
Looking at my HEM the longest regular (non-turbo) where I got first was at 91 minutes. I just threw up thinking about having to do that over and over.
That is a very great introduction video for what seems to be like a very educational series, glad I decided to watch this.
My only one question is - are there no Mac poker players/coaches whatsoever? Every single video I've seen is done in Windows and all the software mentioned are mostly for Windows. There is PT3 for Mac, which I'm using. But I don't think I've heard of any other poker productivity apps for Mac. Anyone?
