I like raising the flop with top set + gutter much more than I like flatting I think. There aren't that many blank turns on a 984tt board, any spade or card between a 5 or Q completes a straight, so I wouldn't want to a) risk losing action from like an overpair + FD, top two with some kind of straight or flush draw type of hand that might think we're raising light with a draw, or b) give him a cheap turn card where most of his range has considerable equity. Also we're deep so I'd like to start building the pot, I'm not sure what turns we can get him to stack off on, and he just saw us raise-fold on the right table.

You do protect your flatting here but your flatting range just improves a ton on the turn/river anyway just because a ton of draws will hit, so I'm not sure you need to protect it that much? Even if the board pairs you're flatting some 94 or 84s right? It's obviously good to have top set in your flop-raising range as well.

Yeah, I agree raising the flop is probably just the best play more often than not. Even if he doesn't play for stacks on the flop, he might call a big raise before a bad card comes that could kill our action. We are also in position so a lot of times when say a 7s comes, it might just go chk/chk.

Why so standard to donk/ship this flop? How deep do we have to be before we consider donking less or check/calling? Does villain really turn 2nd barrel that many cards without the nuts?

My tendency is to sometimes play a draw like this slower because villain will often slow down on turn without the nuts or because I'm concerned that my equity is lower because he's wrapped up with similar cards.
