Enjoyed the kick off! I'm not sold on playing short stacks however. Maybe this is geared more for someone just wanting to learn HU, but I have found shorties are the worst players in terms of never going off for a big number and hit and running for stupid amounts. Seldom in my years of playing HU have I seen a short stack go off for 4+ buyins when match is over. I would much prefer sitting with a big stack where I have greater potential than him. The key to heads up in my opinion is finding the guys who will tilt and have massive ego's and will just play and play when clearly momentum isn't going their way. Maybe later in the series this will be covered.

Regarding Pokertracker, my view is when you start off playing HU you shouldn't be playing multiple tables nor should you use PT as a crutch. Maybe my view is skewed since I have never used PT in my years of playing HU, but if you simply pay attention to the action at the table you can throw stats out the window.

Please don't take this as a negative comment post, as I love always learning more about HU strategy esp. from two great players, I just wanted to offer a different perspective to perhaps change my own thinking on the above subjects.

Very good point regarding PT, and this is something that we'll be touching on throughout the series. Stats are a way of IDENTIFY-ing :-) your opponent as quickly as possible, but they are not guidelines for how to play against them. You'll want to rely on your General strategy and counterstrategies to beat them, not numbers on the screen.

As for the short stacks, you might change your mind after you see Episode Two. And you might not - those guys can be tilty to play against and make you play badly, especially when they hit and run.

the flash version stops and jumps back the start once it gets to the OOP portion.

i had a similar problem with wilts video, so if this is on my end and you guys know how to troubleshoot this, please let me know.

I've heard of the problem but have never been able to duplicate it. Sooooo tough to troubleshoot some of these fancy flash errors unfortunately. What is the time marker where this happens for you? I can try to run it on a few computers but I've already watched it straight through with no errors, so I really have no idea what it could be.

Try upgrading flash (http://www.adobe.com/products/flashplayer/) and let us know what your browser/computer stats are but honestly there's not much we can do to troubleshoot these voodoo errors remotely. Download it FTW so you can enjoy it in the meantime. :)

Hey Lou, thanks for the post.

I tend to agree with you that playing shortstacks isn't the ideal, but we're trying to cover all the bases so that if there are no full stacks around to play, you guys will know how to beat up on the shorties :-)

Also I agree I probably didn't reiterate enough about how the stats are just a guideline and psychology is king when it comes to HU NL. I'll be talking about that more as the series progresses.

For everyone's benefit, the purpose of the stats is to give you a starting point, not an ending point. Use the stats to get a general feel for what you can expect, then use your reads on the player and current game flow to make the majority of your decisions. There are certain stats though, like cbet%, checkraise%, fold to cbet% that simply do not lie and those stats should be taken heavily into consideration when determining counter strategies for various opponents.

Awesome freaking season opener! Great general outline of preflop play and everything. Couple of questions however:

1.) In my experience in HU I've seen great HU players open 60%+ hands from the button and be considered TAG. The general guidelines layed out in this video is a bit over half of that. Are these just "open everytime regardless of villian" type hands or are they a default range to play against an unknown until you find his style and adjust?

2.) I haven't moved up the 50NL yet (that's the losest stakes HUCASH is spread I think) and the only HU experience I can get is playing HUSNG's. How would you guys adjust this strategy to these? Tighter or looser? Less aggressive?

Thanks!

Where should we post HU hands as we attempt to implement and learn this? I posted one in the low stakes NLHE section but got no replies and I have another I think is interesting, but I don't want to go to the trouble of posting it if no one is gonna reply.

Awesome vid though and I'm really excited about this series and I'm enjoying my subscription.

1- Both. In future episodes we will be talking about deviating from General strategy which includes both tightening and loosening up your opening and calling (and reraising) ranges. One of the main purposes in offering these starting hand criteria though is to eliminate lots of the trouble spots that might come up for beginners who aren't used to getting involved in so many marginal situations with a diverse distribution.

2- Tighter, I think, because of the escalating blinds, but I'm really not even close to 100% sure. I'm sure the way to think about the game is the same, but there are technical details unique to SNGs that I'm probably not qualified to comment on.

Now I have not played HU ever but even I was taking notes on hand ranges etc. I got the illusion even I could go to 50NL HU table with said general strategy and not get slaughtered - that's how good I thought the 1st episode was in explaining the core for beginner.

But I hate the variance (that is why I play FR) and prefer my hourly WR just ticking over, slowly but surely. But come one Saturday night and after coupla beers, perhaps I will try HU.

This series is one example where it is not that relevant for me personally, but still very interesting to watch for my general poker education to broaden my knowleadge.

It will be interesting to watch some HU videos with holecards and compare preflop play against general strategy hand range.

Re: button opening range. Even as a general strategy, this seems way too tight. Bear in mind that if you raise 33% of your hands from the button, your opponent can fold every single hand in the BB and break even. I stuck the button opening range suggested in the video into Pokerstove and it comes out as 37%. This means that your opponent could make a profit in the BB by playing only QQ+ AQ+.

Question was about reraising AJo and how to play it post flop... Is this correct? I can't get converter to work. I felt like I had a decent hand but if I pushed the action and got called I was likely behind.

The strategy is meant for beginners and you can of course add hands as you see fit. I have a much looser opening range personally, and again, you'll hear about how and why to add hands as we start talking about how to play some of the more common (and marginal) postflop situations.

A point I'll make is that your opponent could make a profit by only playing those hands (QQ+), but he won't only play those hands. Which is what exploitative strategies are all about.

This is well played in a vacuum, but something to keep in mind when posting HU hands (and to a slightly lesser extent shorthanded HHs), is giving reads and notes on your opponent. This could be the worst play ever against some opponents and standard against others.

We don't have that planned, but I'd recommend between 50-100 buyins for your regular level. HU can be much swingier than 6handed.

Question: How do you arrive at {QQ+,AQ+} range when knowing what % of hands he opens on the BTN? Just curious, as I have no idea how to solve that.

Just checking out HU as I'm a 6max player now but it is interesting for sure. You gave some great info regarding table selection and I found the opening hands very interesting as well. I also saw some vagabonds pop in and out from 200 6 max. Funny. I'll certainly continue with the series and maybe I'll be donking around with the 200HU folks soon as well.

Thanks, Mark

copy/paste the above and put it into a .pah file, then you should be able to import it.

not sure why the right click/save as method didn't work on ie... works fine for me.

wilt/krantz,

I'm just getting round to watching the series and had a really basic question.

In episode 1 you mention hands to open, hands to defend and hands to 3 bet with. You don't mention hands to call 3 bets with.

I imagine you're calling with any of the hands you also 3 bet with but being on the button how can that range be expanded in a general strategy kind of way ?

Also how are we adjusting for stack size 150-200 bb etc

thanks

Hey,

Very helpful and good video.
I have a question however.
You gave a pretty tight range for open raising on the button.
What about open limping some hands like medium Kings and Queens?

we generally do not advocate limping until we have a reason to. Also our range is pretty tight so far since we're trying to lay the foundation for a "General" strategy, keeping new players out of trouble. As the series progresses, you will see hands we analyze where we're playing starting hands that are outside of our general strategy, and we usually give the reasoning for why we'd play those particular hands.

At some point we do limp some hands (i think probably in the videos we made towards the end of the series?) and we'll give the reasoning for doing so (usually because we're getting 3bet a ton), but as a default we like to teach a raise or fold strategy from the button until we have a reason to deviate from that.

Hope you're enjoying the series,
WoT

Hey man,

How do you import the .pah file?

Will that work for UltimateBet as well?

Thanks..
