Episode Two

In Episode two, KRANTZ and WiltOnTilt talk about how to battle one of the most common player types in HU NLHE, the short stack. They begin by identifying the player type, then talk about how they play and what your General strategy should be against them. The episode concludes by discussing several examples of how to take advantage of their tendencies and exploit their strategies through hands played at 1/2nl HU.

You guys are right on with these idiots. Personally the main issue I need to overcome is not tilting when they run and realize I can't always be sitting down in hopes of winning 2-3 buyins in a session with one player.

Funny story, so last night I let a guy play with 50BB at 1/2 which I normally don't do but knew the vid today was going to be on these low lives. So after him getting down maybe 20BB he starts talking shit. Now I normally don't condone trash talking, but when I do it I feel my talk is actually quite good. So I start giving him a little of this, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BnhqkpvPLis.

So after he busts his 50BB at 1/2, he says lets go 3/6. I let him sit first and he buys in for 50BB so I do the same. Obv 10 minutes later he bolts after going bust.

So as Jay talks about the opportunities with the suck out tilt and buying in full phenomenon, you can also use trash talking to bring out the guys ego.

What episode are we going to talk about deep stack's and the opponent that can switch up gears and overall is a pretty solid HU player?

4 stars just cause the topic of short stackers makes me feel dirty.

<3, made me want to play HU.

Up over 7 buy-ins before suddenly pissing back 4 and deciding that I'm probably not good enough to 3 table HU yet :o.

Lou, we get into playing against the better players towards week 4 and 5.

I believe next week is loose passives then weak tights then tags if i'm not mistaken. Should go in the same order as the player types we listed in episode 1.

Hmm. I dont know if I should even mention this but here goes. I been looking forward to the pr1nnyraiding series ever since Krantz first mentioned em back in the limeslicer vids but me for one is a tad disappointed. It feels like these vids are made for someone who barely played poker before, like ever. Thats the quality of some of the concepts you bring up.

I realize that this is an introduction into HU and therefore you have to run the basics etc, but isnt it safe to assume that someone who is looking into playing HU have played atleast some 6/10-handed games prior to that? And dont get me wrong, supersolid content as far as beginner-stuff go for sure.

The thing is that its such a waste of talent imho, Krantz could be doing something far beyond what he is doing atm, no? Sure, you will probably evolve the series into something more advanced later on but I just personally feel that this was a weird way to go about making a fresh HU series thats supposed to be cutting edge (Im not sure if those were your exact words Krantz, prolly something more like "the b-toda-O-M-B" but anywho).

Wiltontilt brings for me nothing in these vids, he is repetitive and downright slow on making his points (sorry dude, Im sure there are tons of peeps thinking otherwise, still gonna air how I felt tho). I think wiltontilt is cramping your style as far as videomaking goes Krantz. I know this whole post will sound like a flame and whatnot, but its not, its just a fan of Krantz that had other expactations on what to come. To be honest Krantz is the only reason I still subscribe to this site since Im a 5/10+ SH player theres not that much else (atleast for me) here, and now when the prinny vs whitelime series has ended theres nothing to fill the void. As you might guess I had hoped for the HU series to be the void-filler :/

So ill guess Ill take my hat of to all of the DC crew and bid you adieu. It was hell of a ride tho.

PS. The whole commentary part of the limeslicer vid where you go into the psychology of realizing that anyone could be Patrik Antonius and that the ultimate nick would be a symbol that noone could type. That deep ninja thinking made me giggle like a little schoolgirl and was worth the subscription cost itself.

Guys, you make some points that I can agree with. This series is for the heads up beginner. That´s why it is so basic and that´s why it is at 1-2 NL. But I challenge you to find better beginners HU content anywhere.

Our membership is divided over many levels of experience. I can´t cater to everyone all at once. Keep in mind this site is veryyy young and for us to ultimately be full of relevant content for everyone, I need to be producing videos that don´t necessarily apply to everyone.

Now that THAT is out of the way. For one, vadskajagha, it´s very very silly to cancel your membership because you don´t like the particular slate of videos we´ve released so far this Season. It´s probably not even worth your time (you play 5-10, yah?) to send the cancellation email! I´d implore you to look at some of the other things that ARE present at the moment that would be of value to you. Last week I posted a 300-600NL hand for discussion in the Heads Up forum. whitelime and myself routinely drop in to offer advice and post hands in our forums. The interaction between you DCers and us is unmatched elsewhere.

Ok, Ok, but what about relevant videos? I have not forgotten about you guys nor have I been ignoring your wants. Youll be pleased to know I am actually the one behind the scenes in charge of much of the overall content development strategy. We have series planned (one that will premiere DURING Season Two that will address our lack of 6max NL videos!) for Season Three and Four... basically series ideas that were created trying to put myself in the shoes of members like you who have come here for our big NL names and have been patiently waiting for us to really strut our stuff. Trust me.

I appreciate the feedback and encourage everyone to tell us what they want to see in our Series Ideas and Request a Video thread. We are listening.

PS Vehemently disagree about WoT slowing me down. He has been my best student and always asks the best questions. Not only does he crush 1-2 HU, he is going to be crushing higher stakes HU games like he does 6max very soon as well.

I wouldnt dare challenge that, nor did I in my thread, on the contrary.

Noted and understandable.

Its not about the money, I was trying to make a point, and as far as point making goes you often have to state an example of direct consequence to get an impact, no matter how silly that action may be.

Perfect! Im really excited about that paragraph! And I do understand that you are the NKOTB (always wanted to actually type that in a sentence, bojah!) and that it will take time to get everything running smoothly, but in the meantime it doesnt hurt to let us in on these thoughts you are having about the future content since it might keep us spoiled brats to check in on your site once in a while.
Again, really excited about TEH strutting of stuff!

PS Vehemently disagree about WoT slowing me down. He has been my best student and always asks the best questions. Not only does he crush 1-2 HU, he is going to be crushing higher stakes HU games like he does 6max very soon as well.

I don't doubt his skill level at all. I don't challenge his knowledge of the game, I only stated that he repeats himself A LOT and make 5 word points into 10 sentences and it just gets a little annoying at times, especially if you are accustomed to watching these kind of vids. Its like over explaining stuff. Just a tip, make it more TO-POINT/cut-to-the-chase-like. It would make for more input/vid and less repetitive stuff. (Just think about how I been saying the same thing for like ever now and how it makes you wanna pounce me :P)

Wilt, if you're reading this, please don't take it in any other way than say if a journalist were giving you writing pointers as in how to formulate your stories to keep the audience interested rather than some 5/10 random dude telling you that you suck, because frankly we both know you don't.

My 2cents on this discussion:

A)Krantz is god. His videos imply that he has the IQ of an MIT grad student. He ownz life in strange ways that I don't understand. His videos are always a fucking rembrant.

B)Wilt on tilt's mathematics of holdem series is pure gold. Wilt is like a modern day buddha that plays cards and gets chicks. Wilt can sometimes be very slow at saying his name. Don't do drugs kids ;--) I can picture it: Dude: What's your name man ? Wilt: ...euh... I don't know man.. Dude: What ? Wilt: I mean.euh...This is Wilt.......... on tilt. <= awkward moment, guy is thinking, he doesn't know his name ? LOL, just teasing dude. This actually happened to me once.

C)Pr1nnyraiding is going to be the best HU series of all time. Mark my words dude.

D)Your in Sweden kid go fishing, don't play poker. No offense, just imho.

E)Can I get some free coaching wilt, I did compared you to the buddha. Same question for krantz. I particulary need help dealing with personal management at the moment.

Thanks guyz you rule !

Hey vadskajagha,

Jay already addressed a lot of your concerns but it really seems to me like the earlier episodes in this series for sure aren't really targeted at you. Especially with things like this:

Its like over explaining stuff. Just a tip, make it more TO-POINT/cut-to-the-chase-like. It would make for more input/vid and less repetitive stuff. (Just think about how I been saying the same thing for like ever now and how it makes you wanna pounce me :P)

When you understand something, it's inevitable that it will sound like someone is repeating things time and time again -- but when you don't, it really can be helpful to have someone like Aaron who is great at exploring different ways to get a point across. His Mathematics series was hugely popular and it's for that reason -- he can take a concept that many players don't understand well (take TUPAC for example) and put it in a way that is accessible to a large portion of the poker playing/learning population. Unfortunately for you (or perhaps forunately, because it means you're ahead of the curve) -- you aren't going to get as much out of it.

There is some pretty sick stuff we have planned for users like you, but our goal is always quality first, and that means we've got a content map to build up to so that our users can learn to get better with us. We will NEVER rush something out just to meet a demand -- it's not part of who we are. That doesn't mean we've forgotten you, it just means that we don't take the strategy of promising all sorts of "things to come" -- we've never been the sort of company to do that. We like to focus as much as we can on our current quality of materials and while I can see that being a bit frustrating because you can't see our big plan at all, we hope you stick around for a while to see the developments that will come once we have a large enough community that can let us have a little 'flexibility' with some of the projects we'd like to bring to light.

Hopefully you take this in such a way that you see that we appreciate the comments, but hope you can not see videos for what they are at the same time as you're telling us how we can improve. I know that's a tough job, but I hope you can understand where we're coming from and that we definitely *are* listening to what you have to say and suggest, but that we also hope you can see that we take the approach that if you try to design something for everyone, you'll inevitabily design something that doesn't work for anybody -- and we want to avoid that.

Ok, enough general Deuces philosophy. I'll end by suggesting that you stick around, because as much as I hate promising things to come, well, we've got some things...down the road. And we always listen to what you have to say. :)

May i hug you, snuggle you, kiss you on the cheek and call you daddy? I love to be called "kid" at the age of 27.

How come you recommend fishing? If I were to plan a fishing trip i would much rather go to some streams up north in the US, like up in Alaska than to go about it here in Sweden actually.

But I agree, poker should always come second to fishing, pottery and/or constructing tall tall papier mache buildings that you later smash (See why i love the kid part?).

Great post, just wanted to point out that I wrote: "And dont get me wrong, supersolid content as far as beginner-stuff go for sure."
Secondly, I just don't see how it could be a bad thing to serve both partys (parties?! My English is pure garbage at times) in one dining? I mean, have some beginner stuff up here on Fridays and jam up some highstakes content on Mondays or whatever. Anyway, I really don't want to make an argument out of this, cuz it was never intended to be one, more or less just some friendly advice.

peace. (with white doves and everything)

Yeah, I definitely get ya. It's mostly going to be a function of how much material we can really produce right now, and this time around we decided to devote ourselves toward a variety of content (Full Ring NL, SSNL, SSNL-MSNL, HULHE, LHE6m, LHE Coaching, PLO, HUNLHE, and The HUament) more than a variety of stakes. We'll be switching this up over time and also will be adding more and more contributors to our roster as we grow, so hopefully you can see that we're listening and are improving but also realize that unfortunately we can't make everything for everybody all the time. Basically we'll never let our quality standards decrease, and it's easy to run that risk if we have our producers stretched too thin. :)

Either way, we'll definitely be taking all of this into consideration for season 3 and you don't have long until you'll see some changes as a result of your suggestions -- so hope this carries some weight for ya. :)

take care (ps - your English really isn't bad at all, stop apologizing!)

Using the current HU series as an example, sure, both players new to HU and advanced HU players need to be facilitated.
To my mind it makes sense to start from the beginning and afterwards move to the advanced series or one-off specials.

Think about the feedback had Krantz and Wilt moved straight to the advanced stuff (whatever that is)?

in his dangerlion blog krantz hinted that he could run through his session vs Ellipses (durrrr's other screen name), and if that's what i'm thinking (the session when we won a lot of buyins off durrrr, basically the one that launched him in the hs hu), then i'll buy 3 years of subscription outright :P

I just wanted to take a minute to say that I am more excited about this particular line of videos than any other on the internet. I have been dying to learn how to play proper HU poker, but although many of the other videos on the net are great, they assume that people already have a solid understanding of HU play. I have been taking extensive notes on the first two pr1nny vids and I am already eagerly anticipating the next. Thank you very much for breaking down HU play into a way that I can easily adapt to and learn from.

I'm glad you made this video. Not feeling confident against shortstacks is a big reason I'd been avoiding HU way down at 50NL. I've played a bunch since watching this and it's been a funny (and profitable) ride. This one guy bought in for 25 and would start openshoving whenever he got below 20.

Also FWIW I've found WoT to be the most effective instructor on the site period and am def happy he's on board for this series.

I went from hating short-stackers to loving short-stackers recently. They are just so profitable, at least at the .25/.5 level.

They are so so so so so easy to trap into going all-in. The best ones are those who stick around after sucking out. Sometimes they get really frustrated and switch to "monkey-maniac-all-in" mode.

I just don't bother playing marginal hands against short-stackers, because I don't mind losing 5 blinds if I know I can get it all back when they go all-in with their J2o against my AK a few hands later...

@foal: I love your avatar...

Well, I have no HUHU experience and this series has totally opened my mind to this game. I was frequently the player on the other side who would play HU with a partial buy-in as I monkey-tilted off the remains of my roll. Now that I have some idea of what the HU game is all about I'm really digging it.

I just started to play HU and had difficult opponent who was loose passive and at same time weak tight. How do you play against those type of players? He had stats 44/1/3 and went to SD 19. I had no clue how to play against him. he won 80% of showdowns. Can't wait for that weak-tight part of your series hopefully I can get few ideas from that.

I like the series. It may be beginner stuff, but that's ok, because I am a beginner too.

I also think it is inevitably hard to make a non-beginner HU video, simply because I believe it is a matter of feel and adjustment. It is like teaching how to improvise. That's just my opinion.

Anyway thanks for the videos.

nice vid guys.. I know a lot of people are hesitant to play shortstackers, but in my experience they're super profitable to play against so it's great to have a vid dedicated to this.. I'd venture to guess that they can make up the majority of your profits since most of them play significantly worse, on average, then a full-stack..
