So, w/ a hand like 99 in a multiway pot vs an initial raiser that you know is going to bet a lot, we're essentially just set mining here? Is it safe to say we're rarely going to see a flop where we can actually play 99 for value here?
Well, I don't think that's necessarily the case. I like to use bullets lately so I'll make some points that way:
- There is a pretty big difference between a 3-way pot and a 4-way pot, especially with those middle pocket pairs.
- The player who bets is important too. If you check, BB bets, PFR checks, and button bets, he can have a somewhat wide range, expecting the PFR always folds, the SB has to worry about you c/r or overcalling, and you, the BB, might have led out with a big draw or set/2pr. If the button had bet here, I'm less inclined to fold.
- a J83 two-tone flop is not a bad flop, but folding this flop is not the same as set-mining. This might be like a 50th percentile flop for 99.
On better flops, or if the flop checks around, or the button bets, or with fish betting or calling the flop, you can navigate to showdown with this hand. It's just that 4 ways, bets are stronger than usual and you're going to be behind more frequently, and as a result you should be playing tighter.
