Calling isn't horrible imo. Whenever I make these calls I tend to be on the winning side, but I like playing maniacs (and also I am a maniac =P) so that might have something to do with it. But...
You definitly need to bet the turn to get the money in by the river, so as played it is fine.

He probably has an overpair and just wants to protect against draws, but he didnt know exactly what to do so he spazzed out and jammed.
