What about JT (John) Johnson (aka Tom Malone) from Frank Zappa & The Mother's of Invention "Freak Out!". Or Malcolm McNab & George Callender from "Hot Rats" - they both were on it but neither made the credits. I'll die by that urban legend. You must trust me on this tuba knowledge.

For bass, I'd have to say Victor Wooten, Marcus Miller, Larry Graham, Les Claypool, Flea, Jaco, and Juan Alderete from The Mars Volta. 
I also think that Prince is one of the most underrated instrumentalists ever.
