What types of things do I need to consider when it comes to moving to Canada? I want to consider it an option right now but I really lost on where to start when it comes to what I need to think about, plan for, etc....

I think if I go I want to go ahead and finish school, maybe get a part time job and of course play poker.

Any advise is greatly appreciated.

Hey mrhobbeys,

Since this isn't really about poker (it's related, but more off topic than poker discussion), I've moved it to our new Off Topic forum. Thanks!

there are a number of reasons people can be denied entry. do some research and make sure you'd get in. arrests/convictions for violent offenses (even old) can do that. talking to a canadian lawyer would not be a bad idea.

some things that people have said are key to admission as a long-term tourist:
-be able to prove you can support yourself - bank records are good
-lease with end date or with future travel plans to exit

Not a criminal Poke Tongue

Thanks for the info. I have downloaded and looked at the paper work needed a few weeks ago, I also took an online test they had. I do want more info though. More ideas if you have them. O and my test results looked promising they said I could get in Wink

And Rob thanks for the move. I was actually looking and wasn't exactly sure which placement would be best.

I moved to canada a couple weeks ago to play poker. There isn't that much to it really if you are a US citizen. As long as you don't have a criminal record (DUI's included) you are fine... you just need your US passport and you can cross and stay an extended period of time.

Finding a place was easy, lots of local listings online to rent apartments/room shares. You are allowed to drive with your US license as well. Banks also let you set up accounts easy enough but you must go into a local branch to set it up.

The only caveat is that you have to cross back to the US every so often (3 months i think) but that isn't a big issue if you pick a city close to the US (vancouver, toronto, montreal, etc).

The biggest hurdle is if you actually plan on working in canada... then you need to fill out forms and must qualify for a work visa. This becomes much more complicated and not a path I elected so I wouldn't be the right person to provide you with more information on that.

Actually that is very helpful, it is good to know it can be done so easily.

What kinds of documentation and other things did you need when you were renting? What kinds of problems did you face when you were getting your poker sites set back up?

And if you don't mind can you tell me what kinds of costs you have incurred so far especially ones that you did not count on.

take a look at cell phones in advance. i have a rogers prepaid plan which i just use when i am in vancouver. if you're living there you'll probably want to get a normal plan, though.

for prepaid, rogers is pretty awesome. you can throw $100+ on and keep the number active for a whole year. if you do the $5/month text plan, you get a bundle of texts and unltd incoming ones. if you use wifi and google voice, too, you may barely rely on the phone's actual minutes.

this is a really nice thing to have if you're ever somewhere that doesn't have internet. pay no monthly fee and then anytime you need a session, bam, $5.

I've traveled extensively over the years and found it to be quite easy (first time is always the hardest)... the biggest hurdle you have to overcome is your fear of just up and leaving.

As far as documentation, just your passport really. My advice if you are travelling alone is to do a roomshare... someone owns a house and rents rooms out. You won't need any fancy documentation like visas, etc and they really don't care if you are US citizen as long as you are allowed to be there (which you are as long as you aren't a criminal and visit USA every couple months) and pay your bills on time. Find roommates who are in your own age group and have something in common with... they can show you the ropes around the city and you have an instant group to go party with if you are moving alone... craigslist is great for that:

http://vancouver.craigslist.ca/roo/

Also, in other countries, I have used: www.airbnb.com, vrbo.com, and homeaway.com

Alot of college students usually buy a pimp house and rent out rooms so its a great way to meet people and also live like a king while not spending a ton of money.

Whatever contract you get from the landloard/roommate lease-wise you can send that in to stars to get your account reinstated... depends on security at the time but you will need that, maybe some utility bills (which won't be in your name but will be in the landlords name on the contract). A phone bill (terp mentioned some great options) maybe required... and that's really about it.

Look through craiglists for some places to live, email some of the ppl and talk with them if you aren't sure about whether you will like the city... I've done this to live in places through out the US, central, and south america (including most recently Baltimore) and have had great experiences over the years
