Because the hand would be a lot less interesting otherwise.

I have only been sitting with this villain for two orbits but during that time he has been opening a LOT of hands PF. I do not yet have a read on his post flop play.

Defensive check here is fine, it's hard for him to know if you're folding 88 to a river bet (and thus he may bluff) or calling with QJs, JJ, etc.

There are some players I'd vbet-fold and vbet-calldown vs., but I think this is a good spot to defensively check against most given that your range is wider than it looks. It's also an ok spot to checkback and fold with hands like 66.

Vs a guy that might be LAGgy, I check back this turn and call any river. I find that this type of player peels a ton of flops, so Ax is definitely in his range, but so are lots of weak peels that are drawing thin/dead. By checking we can induce bluffs from the garbage that he would have folded to a turn bet and we save bets vs Ax.

With this line however, we don't charge any draws he picked up (JT, KJ, KT) or didn't c/r the flop with (XSpade XSpade, 65/54 if he's really loose), as well as any PP he was planning on showing down, so I'm not sure that this is best. I just hate betting and having to either fold or put in 3 bets to show down without more of a read.

This is a spot I play by ear Smile. I like a check a lot more if 3Spade -> 8Heart. Given all the worse hands that probably will call (I assume he calls 5x-2x, FD, Qx that was waiting for the turn, PP, broadways), Im laning towards a valuebet in this case. I wuld bet again on a safe river.
