Evangelical Christians are behind this. Not sure what their motives are but it's definitely not about stopping child soldiers.

Here is what Charlie Brooker had to say about the whole sham:

i saw on the news that there have been teams in Africa looking for kony for years. and also on the news, that the video never actually called for any change in what they are currently doing.
where does the money even go? to the government? so they can continue searching for this guy?

Obviously not. I'd say doubts that maybe the dude that made the documentary might not be as credible as we thought.

Questioning credibility means you're unsure the video is truthful.

I haven't seen it, does it ask for money at some point? If so, are you doubting the money goes to capturing or stopping Kony?

Regardless of hidden agendas, I just always kind of assumed the point was to get the word out about the conditions and history of this stuff. And it seemed to work.

doubts like Kony may be a good guy?

Nah, more like is this guy capable of working on this project because it's not it would be done quickly. And it's no like catching kony would be the end of the problem, there are a lot of people who do horrible things like kony. And if he has to quit because he is going insane it probably makes promoting the organization pretty tough.

Yes, but it is the hidden agenda that is unsettling, not the agenda itself you understand (Christianity) but the fact that people are still so gullible to any form of propagdana, myself included.

Not seeking to reduced this to Godwin's law but I studied history at uni, Nazi Germany in particular, and back then always stuggled to understand why the Germans were so fervent in their support of Hitler.

With Invisible Children, when I saw the clip I thought it was a cool modern piece of activism, someone doing something to make a change, which of course it is. I seriously considered donating, until this buzz kill thread Smile

So it's interesting, as a confirmed atheist, that I was willing to follow this group and was sold an idea.

With Germany, it was the excesses of the Weimar Republic and hyper inflation, which provides an interesting parallel with now and everyone wanting to shoot bankers = jews, usery back then.

So what's interesting is this was one youtube clip, 120m views or whatever, worldwide attention. In 1930s Germany is was all radio, film, newpapers, the government, and opposite views were suppressed. You can imagine the effect that something like Leni Riefenstahl's Triumph of the Will had on people.

I thought Kony 2012 was a study in the rise of social media and modern advertising techniques, when in fact as there's an agenda, it's just good old fashion propoganda.

When I watched the video the first time and saw the crowds of youngsters raising their arms it gave me a chill - watch it again and it does for very different reasons. Not to labour the point, but they look so much like the Hitler Youth.

Thank god there are people in this world that think more critically than I do.

I didn't look to donate or anything (I have my own causes that I work toward), but I'm glad for having seen the video. And I'm glad that others did too. I think many people in this world need to learn about the less fortunate and start caring.

"Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere." -MLK

There may very well be ulterior motives present, but they just never bothered me because I never planned on taking the next step I guess.

As to the propaganda, I like to think of this as a reminder that it can be used for good and evil.

Thank god there are people in this world that think more critically than I do.
