I'm liking this thread more-and-more.
The best I have done with any "diet", is the Ab Diet. The one thing that made it easy for me, was not treating it so strict (as a diet), but instead treating it as a way to create better habits. The 80/20 idea makes me feel much more comfortable with trying this.

-----
Mexican Joke:
*** I love Vitamin-T ***
Tacos
Tortas Ahogadas
Tamales (not so much)
Tostadas
Tequila !!!! (the punch line)

Isn't this list a big fail, for trying to do this diet? Flour Tortillas, Corn (unless I eat the tacos without tortillas hmmm)
That is one thing I love about Mexico compared to countries further South. Taco stands everywhere -- 24 hours per day.

Taco salads are one of my favs, with salsa, sour cream, and guacamole.

I think you just convinced me to quit my primal diet and move to mexico without even trying... LOL Poke Tongue

This thread has me thinking of my own health transformation (sorry in advance if this is tl;dr).

I stopped drinking soda about 6 years ago (unsweetened iced tea ftw) and pretty much cut out all sugar a couple years back. Dairy was the next to go, and that was pretty tough - I'm a red-blooded Caucasian who was raised to drink at least 3 glasses of milk a day for the past 24 years. Switched to unsweetened almond milk last year and do not miss milk at all. I still eat cheese on occasion because it is so damn hard to avoid (especially when eating out), but cutting out the majority of my dairy consumption has been awesome. A couple days ago I tried a small glass of milk for the lulz and it almost made me puke...not to mention I instantly had that disgusting phlegm response and was coughing up mucus the rest of the day. Throughout all of this I've also noticed that my meat cravings (especially red meat) have gone down considerably. Nowadays I eat mainly lean meats (poultry) and fish while shunning burgers and steaks.

Cutting out grains sounds damn near impossible to me. I LOVE breads, pastas, cereal, oatmeal, etc and they are definitely staples of my diet. I eat whole grains whenever possible, though from reading Mark's Daily Apple I don't think this matters much to the anti-grainers.

I'm not quite convinced that grains are as terrible as Mark has us believe when a ton of mainstream nutritionists seem to say the exact opposite. However, I'd like to give the "no grain for 30 days" thing a shot...my big concern is what in the hell I will substitute?! To me one of the biggest upsides to eating grains is that they are super convenient, especially when you are a lazy 20-something who can't cook.

n0whereman posted some good non-grain staple recommendations, but does anybody have anything even more convenient? I'm talking foods that require little to no advance preparation and will keep me as satisfied as grains do.

For those who already have the Primal Blueprint and Primal Blueprint Cookbook there's a new cookbook coming out in 3 days... I pre-ordered it from amazon:

http://www.amazon.com/Primal-Blueprint-Quick-Easy-Meals/dp/0982207743/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1300830453&sr=8-3

Also if you sign up for the mailing list you get free e-books, one of which is a primal cookbook

http://www.marksdailyapple.com/feeds/

I would upload it, but its free if you sign up for the mailing list, so you could always just download it and unsubscribe...

I'm going to do this to get ready for my beach vacation next week:

How to Get Ripped with Food: A 7-Day Plan

I'm already fairly ripped so this should be pretty sick.

This is essentially what my diet is already. Beef, Chicken, Lamb, Tilapia, Haddock, Salmon, Cod, Tuna, Other seafood, Chicken, Turkey, Shrimp, Eggs, Salad, Carrots, Broccoli, Cauliflower, Cabbage, Lettuce, Tomato, Onions, Asparagus, etc, Mixed Nuts, especially almonds and almond butter, Apples, Bananas, Grapes, Pears, Grapefuit, Oranges, Melon, etc. No peanuts, no beans, no rice, no bread, no pasta, no potatoes/sweet potatoes, little milk, little cheese, lots of water, black coffee, tea. I try not to drink any calories. Very little alcohol (I love beer what can I say), Very little chocolate(I'm a Cadburys fiend).

All of my carbohydrates come from fruits and vegetables, and what little dairy I have.

I had some Cadbury mini eggs yesterday and my heart was racing and I was all jittery, it was intense.

Optimum Whey after workouts and with meals, Optimum Casein before bed, and Animal Pak vitamins with my first meal of the day.

Nowhereman you posted in Travis Steffen's thread that Ketosis is not your friend. I am not a doctor or a scientist, and I have read conflicting views on it online and can't really get any straight answers.

I am not diabetic.

What is the difference between Ketosis and Ketoacidosis and how are they related. Is ketosis bad for you? Does ketosis lead to ketoacidosis or do only diabetics have to worry about it?

Say my body is in ketosis between meals or if I have a gap in carbohydrate intake for a day or something, should I be worried?

Is ketosis a side effect of all High-Fat Low-Carb diets?

You will always find conflicting reports on this stuff. Just go to any fitness/health website and there will be plenty of people who disagree with this primal way of eating, and that's not to say it's wrong by any means but that also doesn't mean it's right or the only way to become healthy. You can use eggs with diabetes as a good one. For years the idea of diabetics easting eggs was frowned upon but recently there has been new light shed upon the subject and a lot of the "research" if you will now says eggs are not nearly as bad as originally thought.

Just use trustworthy sources and you will usually find your answer.

yeah not bad man. my diet is fairly similar to you and I also drink the optimum whey and casein. not so much the casein, but i have before and it's good. I probably won't follow this 7 day program 100%, but more so try to take from it upping the ratio of vegetables in my diet because I don't eat enough.

I'm not nearly enough of an expert on this that I'd want you to take me at my word, but temporary ketosis is fine. Anyone on the Atkins diet is probably in ketosis for the first bunch of weeks. I'd say that constant, long-term ketosis is probably bad, but my main reason for saying it is that I think it makes sense that we have all three macronutrients for a reason. Just as super low fat and super low protein diets are bad, so too (likely) is a no-carb diet.

fwiw the main problem with eggs was cholesterol and now people realize that dietary intake of cholesterol apparently has little impact on your own cholesterol levels.

from what i've read no carb diets aren't as good as everyone thinks and can actually make you gain weight more easily.

also, there is nothing wrong with eating complex carbs during the day. even if you are sitting at a desk. your body will use them. the problem is eating carbs before bed time when your body shuts down while you sleep.

i've also read this as well. i eat a lot of eggs and mostly for dinner a couple hours after working out because it's super easy and the protein and other benefits are solid.

Nowhereman, do you have any opinions on the "slow-carb diet" from Tim Ferris' 4 hour body? I've lost 5-10lbs on it in a month (so far) and I feel pretty good.

Anyone have any recipes for sauces that they like? I am good with cooking lean meats on the stove top or in the oven, but they are often dry (chicken breast for instance) and I seem to be awful at just "winging" it with making a tasty / still fairly healthy sauce.
