so let's move this discussion away from the smoky gentlemen's club out into the main street.

what's your guys picks for best value liquors in the $10-30 category (750ml bottle)?

whisky, tequila, vodka, rum.

i'm a noob at liquors, so right now i only have go to's in tequila and vodka.

Hornitos Reposado tequila, $20 a bottle. 100% blue agave, rested 2 months.

Sobieski vodka. $12 a bottle. ranked as the #1 vodka by the Beverage Tasting Institute in 2007.

I really like Russian Standard vodka. It's about $15 for a 750ml bottle.

thanks, Russian Standard will definitely be my next bottle! currently on a Polish vodka kick now, but Russian vodkas is the obvious progression.

I'm on a bottle of Luksusowa ($14) right now as i'm comparing it to the Sobieski.

Vodka is supposed to be "neutral," so if that's the case, Sobieski (rye vodka) was awesome as it had no taste hardly and had a quick finish (a defining characteristic of rye vodkas i'm told, or my untrained palate).

but this current Luksusowa, a potato vodka, is much more... "alcoholy" if i may be so non-technical. it's got a longer finish and has a heavier mouth-feel and fills the nose on a sniffing. the reviews i read say it's because of the oil in the potato vodka. this is a highly rated Vodka, and it's smooth sipping, however. creamy is the best description i can find. but the final verdict will be in the morning.

For a good cheap vodka I like Svedka. For rum I like Appleton's, its a dark rum that one of my friends from Trinidad turned me onto and makes really good rum and cokes.

And if your ever up for trying something different, try barenjager. Its a shot and tastes nothing like jager. It tastes like honey and even gets thick if you keep it in the fridge...yummy.

Whisky:
Bushmills cant be beat for the price.
Oban is exceptional, and even people who dont drink scotch usually appreciate it.
Like others who have commented, Macallan puts out great scotch whisky as well.
My favorite scotch: Highland Park 18yr. Sometimes review as best spirit. Period.

I'm surprise ther hasnt been much mention of good vodka.

The best tasting, most versatile alchoholic drink today IMO:

Grey Goose Vodka on the rocks, with a twist.

It doesnt get any better.

If someone can show me a better tasting, more simple, esthetically pleasing drink, I would love to hear about it.

PS it has to be Grey Goose. I have not tried a single high end vodka that compares to it straight up.

yum yum

Does anyone on here like Cognac? Can recommend a delicious cognac in the 100 dollar range?

I like it, but I don't know enough to make any recommendations.

Good vodka + red bull

If it's a red bull/vodka night I'm not too concerned if it's good vodka or not. I'm probably hanging out with Joe Tall at his VIP table in his white blazer.

I haven't ever spent that much on Brandy or Cognac(same thing), but try E&J "XO". It is only like $20 for a bottle and is quite good in my fairly uneducated opinion. Its actually the bottle I recommended when I first started this thread and what I still buy.

Hendricks Gin and Schweppes tonic, tall glass, lots of ice with a slice of cucumber.

The tonic is important and you can't go wrong with schweppes. Britivc & many others suck.

i've always preferred belvedere or ciroc, but i've not tried more than 4-5 premium vodkas by name.

if you like vodka, check out the tasting flights at the red square at mandalay bay in las vegas. the food there is already incredible, but even i enjoyed the experience and flavor of getting flights of shots embedded in giant red ice cubes. i easily preferred some of what i tried there to the two i listed above, but i don't drink enough vodka to hunt them down.

two dollars is the price of a good beer my friend

besides, there are quite drinkable wines for $8, very good ones for 12-15 and excellent ones for 20

hendrick's is very good

toward the end of college i worked at a bar called lounge 201 in DC. they had an insane collection of spirits and let us sample and mix at will. really fun job, of course, and where i became acquainted with hendrick's and a number of others. Smile

if you guys mix at home a lot, i'd recommend the soda stream. it's a lot easier to make 1L of club soda as needed than to have dozens of tiny bottles or cans of club or tonic or whatever. you can get syrups for every kind of beverage, including a pretty close red bull knockoff they make.
