YES. I've been meaning to do this for a while, so expect me to post in here a bunch. I looked at those Seattle standards - I have 4 or 5 at level 3 and one level 4 (400m run). If only I could put on 15lbs of muscle and magically become flexible, I'd maybe someday become a firebreather.
I'll try to give a decent run-down of wtf Crossfit is tomorrow, although honestly copy-pasting something from someone much smarter than me will suffice. Danzasmack and KRANTZ are both semi-crossfitters.

what the heck is crossfit?
It's an exercise program which suggests that fitness has 10 components:
cardiovascular/respiratory endurance,
stamina,
strength,
flexibility,
power,
speed,
agility,
balance,
coordination,
and accuracy
and tries to improve all of them via relatively short, intense workouts. The definition implies you that you should work on your weaknesses.
It results in some half-crazy improvements. I started after a close mugging attempt (also after reaching 40). I'd never lifted a barbell before. Last week, I deadlifted twice my bodyweight:

My wife is a level one certified instructor, olympic lifting certified, and also into crossfit endurance and endurance running events (will be certified for that whenever they have the next certification in san diego I assume) - i'll mention the thread to her. She was a judge at the regional crossfit games a couple weeks ago and is basically very into the whole crossfit thing!

I used to be able to do muscle ups...
Also slowjoe, ever consider brazilian jiujitsu? It is a good low impact form of self defense, if the mugging thing bothered you.
Can someone post the link for where they scale back crossfit work outs for the less skilled/strong/equipment able participant?

I told DeathDonkey that there were CrossFitters in the DC World!
I judged at the SoCal regionals, which was a ton of fun. There are some amazing athletes that competed. I haven't been the the Games in Aromas yet. DD and I will be on a cruise during them this year, so I will miss them again.
That Seattle matrix with the different levels is a great tool to track progress. I'm still in the lower levels for lifting (those weights are heavy!), and the higher levels on endurance. I'd be happy to work with anyone that wants to improve their oly technique, endurance, and general CrossFit skills... provided you live in or are visiting San Diego.

FWIW, anyone seriously interested in both poker and fitness might fit in at the 2p2 Health&Fitness forum. If you read the FAQs, and follow the newbie guides for whatever your goals are then by the time you need to ask the forum members more specific questions, you'll be able to judge who the fitness-trolls are and who actually knows anything about anything (a bit like poker forums, really).

I'm not even remotely smart enough to talk with those people, but I do lurk a good bit.

Interesting that you are struggling with the lifts (which for the uninitiated, are keyed on bodyweight multiples. Don't want to come over like "Waddaya expect, yer a gurl", but I have noticed that certain standards on the Seattle grid a MUCH easier than others. The level 3 400m is like nothing if you compare it to a bodyweight OHS.
I have a few level 3s:
DL, Bsquat, 400m run, 500m row, clean. Of these, the lifts took a year of training, whereas the run seems easy, and the row was just low hanging fruit for a 6ft/220lb man.
What I want to ask is, how to women's standards compare to mens? The standards adjust for mens/womens rowing times and kettlebells. Are the BW standards tougher on women?

Alright! I need to read this thread every day as I slowly get myself back into shape.
I was 3 on 1 off xfit for some time, great shape, and really just fell of the ball. I always tell myself I'm going to get back into it and now slowly I am, even though I've put on a good chunk of weight. The scaling options are very helpful of course. I took today off but will be Randy Rx tomorrow which should be a lot of fun.
A few things I"ve learned when getting back into it - you need to stretch a lot more than you think. When I took classes @ the blackbox I didn't even think about stretching but I was doing bikram yoga 1 or 2x a week (these things happens when your lady drags you). Then, I tried to do get back into xfit without proper stretching and of course I wake up with knees/elbows swolen like whoah.
Anyway I'll be joing the blackbox when I get back to NY in July so holler if you're a NYer and go there!
