if you're looking to add pounds and get stronger, do starting strength + possibly GOMAD imo. once you add the weight you can start adding metcons back into your workout routine to shed any excess fat pretty easily.
Or go for the 5x5, thats a nice one too. In the end lifting weights is the same as playing poker ..just KISS

THIS!
I started at 5'9" 145lbs and 3 months later I was 175+lbs with my lifting weights skyrocketing. Great feeling. I ended up slacking but I'm trying to get back into it now.

Bump an older thread. I'm going to be starting. I've started it like 6 times and always quit like a week to two weeks in. The farthest I've made it is like 16 days. How do you guys keep motivated? I'm just a slackass I guess.

having a time of day/routine helps. using the worksheets helps. working out with a friend is also a big motivator. weight loss, body fat %, measurement goals, etc.. all good things

Having quantifiable goals and working out with a friend are definitely two great ways to keep yourself in the game. The most important factor though IMO is enjoyment. Do you enjoy the workouts? If you don't like your workout routine it's nearly impossible to stick with it. Why bust your ass doing something you hate when there's a million different ways of improving your fitness (regardless of your definition of fitness)? If P90x (or whatever you do) isn't enjoyable, find something you like and do that instead. You'll be happier, you'll work out more, and you'll see better results.

Just got this DVD set....(they delivered in the wrong country, so I have to wait a few weeks to see it)
Any of you guys started from being overweight and completely out of shape?
Last time I went rowing or running was about 10 years ago.
My job is heavily focused on desk work and "the good life".
I work for an embassy, so I can't really say no to all these functions and "goodwill dinners/lunches/vodka bashes". I'm already skipping way too much of those.
Can't put all things like dumbbells in my luggage either, I need to have everything with me for 3 months, every time.
Pretty stable in weight for the last 10 years, still buy the same size of suits.
Female attention is still there, so that's cool too ;-), but it's just "off" for my personal taste.
Don't really eat junk food, last time I had anything like a hamburger was 15 years ago. Salads and South European dishes mostly.
Smoking like a chimney though.
Also has anyone had success without any of the supplements as here they are not really that easily obtainable where I am.
I have to travel constantly in Europe and Russia etc, all different countries, new places every time.
Usually languages where I don't know anything but curses and "seductive things" in.
Not exactly anything that has to do with food supplements and diets.
Getting food-stuff to me via the internet is also out of the question as it mostly hangs in customs and by the time it's let free I'm usually already in another country.
A challenge....

I'm using these resistance bands (the 13 lb already broke) I don't really like them.
I tried a bunch of different resistance bands and ended up hating, breaking or outgrowing most of them. My advice is to just get a set of dumbbells if you can, and +1 on bodybuilding.com

There's a fitness test you should be able to pass before starting the program. It's not super challenging, but if you can't do it, you will most likely struggle so much to get through the basic exercises that you aren't going to see too much benefit from P90x. There are plenty of more basic fitness programs you can find for free on the net - I'd recommend doing one of those for a month or two and retaking the fitness test then if you fail it.

If I were you, I'd start by quitting smoking. It's going to make getting through the tougher workouts even more challenging. And I know I'm not telling you anything you don't know here, but cigarettes are doing way more damage to your body than what good will come of doing P90x. I quit a few years ago and it was brutal, but it was the best thing I ever did for myself. I can't even imagine doing p90x or crossfit as a heavy smoker.
