Hey guys. As part of our commitment to providing you with the best that we can, I'm making an early look into if/when we'll need to consider replicating our data on EU-specific networks/servers. So if/when you guys have problems, speak up here, and let me know how things are looking on your end.

For those who are extra uber-techgeeky, I've got a more specific request:

From your commandline (linux, Mac users only or PC users who have installed cURL), issue the following command:
curl http://testmeplease-us.s3.amazonaws.com/10mb.bin > /dev/null

Then, for comparison:
curl http://testmeplease-eu.s3.amazonaws.com/10mb.bin > /dev/null

This is mostly to satisfy my curiosity, but it will definitely help us to keep providing great service for you down the road and ensure that things like Flash streaming always work as well as possible. Smile

your friendly tech-geek,
Rob

This is from Finland.

curl http://testmeplease-us.s3.amazonaws.com/10mb.bin > /dev/null

% Total % Received % Xferd Average Speed Time Curr.
Dload Upload Total Current Left Speed
100 10.0M 100 10.0M 0 0 237k 0 0:00:43 0:00:43 0:00:00 276k

Average download speed is 237k here.

curl http://testmeplease-eu.s3.amazonaws.com/10mb.bin > /dev/null

% Total % Received % Xferd Average Speed Time Curr.
Dload Upload Total Current Left Speed
100 10.0M 100 10.0M 0 0 522k 0 0:00:19 0:00:19 0:00:00 468k

And 522k here.

This is from a fast subnetwork.

Hey jajvirta,

Could you do me a favor and test those links with 100mb bin files as well? (.com/10mb.bin -> .com/100mb.bin).

I'd like to see what sustained rates from good networks are in the EU -- obviously things should be faster using the centers in the EU, but I just want to see how decent the sustained rates are in the US additionally.

thanks,
Rob

Hi,

I've not got my linux machine here and I don't have the cURL binary on this windows machine but at the moment I can get around 500kbs from your current servers (I'm in the UK). I used to use S3 myself and I've never had a problem with speeds (and the UK phone network is truly one of the most woeful in Europe)

http://testmeplease-us.s3.amazonaws.com/100mb.bin

had the average speed of 270k

and

http://testmeplease-eu.s3.amazonaws.com/10mb.bin

had the average speed of 550k.

Im not a tech person but the download speed of the stream is very very slow. In fact its wrecking my head and I give up after 10 mins cause I only have seconds of video to watch. The ''download wmv'' doesnt work either so I cant watch the videos that way either.

I can do a video of this action if that helps.

OK. Must have been a server issue due to overload or something technical because its fine now.

Well, I doubt it's due to overload based on our provider (I've never seen them get saturated), but it could have easily been something in the routing from your specific connection to the Amazon servers. Where are you located? By the avatar, I'd guess near MA, but you can never really tell these days... Smile

LOL I'm in Ireland (there's a few baseball fanatics here). Ive managed to realise that I can download the wmv file but not thru FlashGet (which is my usual method. The stream was slow but, as I said, seems fine now. Sorry for the moan ; Happy as a pig in sh1t now!

Where are you located? In cases like this given our hosts, it's almost always either going to be something on your side/net connection or something in the path your servers take to get to ours. I tested (right now actually) and am downloading Limeslicer EP4 at 765kb/s from Seattle, WA on a DSL connection.

Hey Entity,

I'm down in Sydney, Australia. Lately I've been having some issues with Speeds. During our Days the speeds are sitting around 250kb/s mark which is great. But in the afternoons around 4 PM +10GMT Till 11PM the speeds drop down to sub 10KB/s (usually sub 5KB/s).

I'll run some diagnostics later on today to see what I can work out for you.

Hey Brenton,

When you get those slow speeds try the EU Amazon servers. I'm 100% certain that there is no saturation on our end at this point (have done exhaustive testing on our hosts), however, I'm interested to see what speeds are like to our Aus, NZ, and other non-EU customers when they test on both the EU and US servers. Run a few traceroutes both when you have good download speeds and when you have bad, and then of course test the EU download servers when the US servers seem slow, etc. That should be more than enough for me to go off of.

Depending on the results that we get back from those tests we may implement some cool mirorring stuff that I'd like to do, but our developers would probably kill me if I added this to their plate and we didn't really have a use for it yet. Good luck and happy downloading. Smile
