You’re playing live poker and you just folded before the flop. You’ve got a minute or two, maybe longer, before you get more cards. What to do? What to do? You could watch TV. You could turn the volume up on your headphones. You might order a beverage, or converse with a player... Read More
Here’s a hand I played in the big no-limit game at Lucky Chances. There was a guy in the game I’d never played with before, and he was giving lots of action. So far I’d played two pots against him. Both times I was on the button. Both times the river went check-check. Both times I tu... Read More
My friend Jack is from China. When he speaks English, he does so with a very heavy accent, and his word selection has on occasion caused me to reach for my pen to capture the moment. Like this one time… We were playing shorthanded $40-80 limit hold’em in the middle of the night. A ha... Read More

When I play no-limit hold’em, sometimes I’m a minimum wager wagerer. And I don’t mean minimum wager wagerer as in “one who tries to bet the smallest amount that will get them to fold if they have nothing,” such as when the flop is A-A-6 rainbow and a bluffer bets h... Read More
When I moved to California in 1997, my bankroll was about $100,000. That was the barrier between floating freely on the breeze, and crash landing in the dank underworld of employeedom. Of this $100,000, about $40,000 of it was in the form of actual money. About $20,000 of it was money that cred... Read More
I was in the big blind in the $10-10-20 game. The player under-the-gun opened the pot for the minimum, $40. He had about $7,000. Everyone folded to the button, who called the $40. He had about $6,000. The small blind folded. It was my turn. My stack was $5,000, and my hand was Q-9 suited. If I w... Read More
So far this year I’ve been playing almost entirely no-limit hold’em almost entirely at Lucky Chances Casino, near San Francisco. This area of the country lays claim to lots of things that have never existed anywhere else, such as The Golden Gate Bridge, Jerry Garcia, and the triple b... Read More
I’ve been in Kansas City for a few days now with my family, and got the chance to play a little live poker tonight at Harrah’s. There are a few things of note about this casino and its patrons: There are some ridiculous rules regarding entry and buying chips, primarily as a result o... Read More
In a not particularly good live 100-200 game i was dealt AKo in the sb. We were 8 handed and it was folded around to the cutoff who openraised. I 3 bet. This reraise will look like a wider range of hands than a normal 3 bet in this game because it's a blind steal situation. Just as cutoff's open... Read More
After a week off from a bad night of coolers, I’m back at the tables and killing it. When I started playing live after Black Friday, my plan was to avoid the regulars and just target the 1-2 fish I could easily identify. Now, I’m realizing that the regulars at my games are just as bad and a great source of money! Even guys who clearly spend 40+ hours a week playing have fundamen ... (continued)
I’m trying to decide if the two hour round trip to play cards during the week is worth it. Basically two hours for four hours of play. I’m not sure, then hands like this happens. UTG folds, UTG+1 raises $12, fold, fold, MP+1 calls, fold, fold I call OTB /w K J , SB fold, BB calls; pot is $44 Flop comes J 7 2 BB checks, UTG+1 bets $20, MP folds, I call $20, BB folds Turn 3 (pot: $83) UTG+1 bets $ ... (continued)
I haven’t given an update on much of my poker playing for a good reason. My poker challenge of zero to hero was going well up until the month of September when I focused primarily on NLHE. The easiest way to describe it would be…falling off a cliff followed by an uptick to breakeven over the course of another 3,000 hands followed by another cliff. Much like the offensive line of ... (continued)
2009 was the first year that I felt more confident in my poker game, especially when it came to LHE. I had been playing .50-1 online and knew that I was a winning player over a long enough sample size. I had built my online bankroll up to the point where I had a good amount of cushion for the next level up at 1-2 if I felt confident in the jump. Normally you want between 250-500 BBs at ... (continued)
So I decided to learn how to play Backgammon a few days ago. I saw a Hoyle’s rules book in the beach house where I am staying and took a break from kid duty to read the rules. There was a backgammon set, but I didn’t have anyone to play with, so I downloaded a droid application and went on to play over 200 games at different skill levels. This may be the next thing I become h ... (continued)

Came to a few realizations/decisions recently Going back to school to pursue a degree in marketing and design Taming the degen and embracing my inner geek. I think I had it backwards before Live players. WOW. Played in a game last night. Will break down every player in the game in detail in a post later tonight. I will be playing live at least twice a week and will use this blog as a center for note ... (continued)
What It Do DC? I suppose avoiding talking about the big bomb dropped on US players is impossible. That sucks for all affected. I think that my life will continue as normal, but the games will possibly get better through the lack of the US players, who are probably better than the average worldwide player. A lot of interesting things to read about on the subject, Wicked Chops and Pokerati are both excel ... (continued)
I played a lot of hours this month so far. I try to play an average of 4 hours a day which normally means I get to play 2-3k hands. At the moment I feel good about it, but I know that I have to make some changes to keep being able doing that. My average day looks like this: Getting up at 9:30am, work from 10am to 3pm, dinner, poker from 4pm to 8/10pm, and then doing what I want to do. Tbh, after working ... (continued)
As is customary upon my return to Florida, me and dad took a little trip down to the poker room, which as of last year finally has real no limit games for actual money. Hooray for progress! And more importantly, hooray for fish. As usual, the highest game going was 5/10 with a $1k cap. Not super high stakes, but certainly high enough to be worth the trip. So I got on the list for ... (continued)
