Maybe this HH isn't the best for this example but I've played a shit ton on hands lately and it would take forever to find a better one. So say someone limps utg or mp, someone else overlimps and then you're in the bb with a hand like in the HH it seems like the overwhelming majority of the time I bet here one of them calls and I end up having to ck/f almost all turns. Is it alright to ck/f these kind of hands on the flop sometimes?

Poker Stars, $0.25/$0.50 No Limit Hold'em Cash, 4 Players

CO: $52.92 (105.8 bb)
BTN: $72.42 (144.8 bb)
SB: $40.60 (81.2 bb)
Hero (BB): $78.33 (156.7 bb)

Preflop: Hero is BB with 3Diamond 6Spade
CO calls $0.50, BTN calls $0.50, SB folds, Hero checks

Flop: ($1.75) 6Club 8Diamond 8Heart (3 players)
Hero bets $1, CO calls $1, BTN folds

Turn: ($3.75) 8Club (2 players)
Hero checks, CO bets $3, Hero folds

I feel like you should keep betting. Especially against weak oppenants. Someone who open limps is usually teriable. This board is really dry.
Vs most passive fish I would half pot all three streets and fold to any raise. Somtimes we will value own are self. But that is ok

I hate these spots, too. Generally, I think we can check-fold when we flop bottom or middle pair and it goes check, bet, call, say. I also release bottom pair often even if it simply goes check, bet, fold. We need to factor in that we can't keep calling, so releasing the hand early often saves us money. So, I now check-fold in spots like this often and bet only if there is a reasonable number of turn cards I would like.

In this particular example, however, our hand is comparatively strong. An 8 is unlikely, so he often has a low pocket pair or an unimproved A. I would like bet, bet, bet small against passive players. No need to bet big, we want to get value from weak hands.

I think it's better to check call vs a thinking player. You're hand is very face-up when you bet into 2 players and can be exploitable. You have a 6 or small pocket pair and people can barrel you off it, but when you check call people can more readily put an 8 into your range and not bluff so much imo.

I dont get it? I would just keep betting I likely have the best hand. Are you worried about 77+ or the case 8? Most likely he has Ax and thinks he has the best hand.

I like these spots because I get to see a free flop and either make a huge hand and get paid off by a limping fish or I raise pre and often they call and fold on the flop, or I hit nothing and fold to any bet.

Theres not much point in trying to overthink these spots, you dont play them against thinking players just fish.

I quite like check calling. Just because I expect a limping fish to float with the vast majority of his range. I also expect them to fold this air to a second barrel a lot, although in this case he might not fold some Ax. increasingly I find people betting when checked to.
check/calling is far from balanced, but vs a limping fish, our strategy doesn't really matter. It's more about maximising value from our exact hand. So since I think his calling range is narrower than his betting, thats why I prefer c/c.

Think I' ve heard Baluga talk about this at somepoint.

Yeah I agree checking here is going to induce bluffs some portion of the time so you can't fold when he bets

This is what I was thinking. I usually raise them pre just because I get annoyed when 3 people sit there and tank check tank check tank check and the hand takes 15 mins lol.

I was planning on ck/c turn but he bet way bigger than his std. and he wasn't some 40 vpip limper I think it was like 15 with a 2 pfr and he was super fit or fold otf so I didn't think he would float with nearly as many Ax or broadways as most fish. I would keep betting turn 1/2 pot if I thought he had those.

Hero's range looks a lot like 6x or some miracle straight draw, and so on this turn card, when hero checks, villain can lead out his entire floating range (Ax) - in that sense, check calling the turn is fine, it's the river bet that's troublesome. If he bets it, he's more than likely going to be polarized or thin value betting depending on the card. It would be nice to know what sort of player this is in that spot. A passive that open limps is going to value bet thinly when an over card rivers? I doubt it, but is there a reason for him to open limp (any table dynamics like heavy 3betters, or really aggro players)? If there are, his open limp can mean different things, but generally it's that he's fishy and passive and likely to float with overs and then bluff them here (so he's polarized when betting, and prone to be passive when the board gets scary to him)
